Warning: Inauthentic but Tasty Food Ahead
The 2008 Clemens Busch Riesling Kabinett trocken , $21, Mosel Wine Merchants, was in fact a lovely match. Baked rice has become one of my stand-by dishes in the past year. It's hard to imagine a more versatile kind of cooking. Basically, you season the rice, add whatever vegetables or meat you like, some stock, and bake the rice.

From Barrel to Bottle Tasting NYC
On that 2008 trip I was invited to stay at the winery's gorgeous chateau in Entre du Mers. Sopexa JoLynn Howe (right)
... so I will be in Bordeaux in a few weeks to attend En Primeur ... and so appreciated the snapshot of some of the 2009s showcased by Sopexa's Le Cercle Rive Droite today for journalists and members of the trade.

Did you know that wines from Italy are the most imported wines to the USA?
In Manhattan, Italian wines are very hot, and they are most diverse and exciting at the restaurant I Trulli, which has hundreds of Italian wines on its list.

The best box wines of 2008
So my relatives were the latest involuntary recruits in my effort to find the best box wines of 2008. I’ve poured this wine, introduced for the first time in 2008 , many times to groups this year, often blind and from a decanter, and it has been almost universally praised. “Merry Christmas!” 8221; I said to my aunt as she greeted us at the door for our annual wintry get together with my cousins. “Here’s

BOOOO - Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri 2008 tasting
Well, I had hoped to follow up my very positive Alto Adige tasting with a successful Gambero Rosso tasting. It was recommended by an industry contact so although I am quite busy I made the trip crosstown to try and taste through some wines. And then I was hit with IT - the PRETENTIOUS people.

Laurie Daniel: What's ahead for wine drinkers in 2008
A recent article , "What's ahead for wine drinkers in 2008" , written by Laurie Daniel for the San jose Mercury News is an interesting read, with 4 predictions listed below. Not much for me to add but I do want to comment on #3.
1. Domestic wines should look more attractive as prices rise on many imports.

2008 Monte Bello Futures Tasting
Thus, every trip up Monte Bello Road is a lesson and an adventure. The 2008 Monte Bello *** will (probably) be made from just cabernet sauvignon and merlot for the first time in twenty-five years. Difficult to compare to recent vintages (which have all included at least some cabernet franc or petit verdot) this is less flamboyant than the 2006 and 2007, and will benefit from extended cellaring. We also barrel tasted a 2008 Monte Bello from a Taransaud barrel (there are only three in the chai , purchased

Late Bottled Vintage Port: a sweet gift
“I always thought port was gross,” a friend told me after I poured him a port that he actually liked. “But 8220;But I guess that’s because I always had it at my uncle’s where the bottle had been open since last Christmas.” 8221;

Friday Night Bubbles
Last time I was in Paris I really enjoyed the way the cafés serve sugar cubes with your espresso. It's little things like this, for me, that help to define a place. Anyway, I noticed that each café seemed to have its own brand of sugar cubes, and as a somewhat obsessive and strange person, I decided that these would make a nice souvenir.

Montes, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007, Classic Series, Chile
2008 photo by Dave Triege From the Colchagua Valley in Chile comes this playful Cabernet Sauvignon... it's a deep colorful wine, (literally and figuratively) and I found myself enjoying it more as it breathed. The color is a dark ruby, and fruity aromas prevail with a wisp of smoked bacon, probably from the American oak, caramel, and a hint of tree bark.

Riesling & Co. World Tour 2008
As I mentioned in my post yesterday, I went to the NYC Riesling tasting at the Tribecca rooftop. A beautiful venue right off Hudson Street near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, the Tribecca Rooftop provides a great escape from the hectic nature of NYC. The tasting had 39 official tables, in addition to an Austrian table, a French table and my favorite, the "1990's: a decade of German Riesling" table.

Polaner Spring Portfolio Tasting, 2008
I went to the Polaner Spring Portfolio Tasting today at Gotham Hall in Manhattan. My plan was to taste through the Dressner producers, as I cannot make it to the big Real Wine Attack tasting at Chambers Street this year - that they scheduled it on Passover is a clear affront to wine-loving Jews all over the world. In three and a half hours I made it through most of Dressner and some other interesting wines too.

John Gilman - View from the Cellar - On collecting and collectible values
John Gilman is one of the people who I have enjoyed getting to know in 2008. What’s a top wine experience you had in 2008 where the context mattered as much as the wine?
A He started his career in wine retail, later worked as a sommelier with a soft spot for Burgundy, and now has embarked on the foolhardy notion of writing a bi-monthly wine newsletter, A View from the Cellar . Except maybe he’s not so foolhardy since, unlike a blog, he actually charges for his newsletter!
