Visiting Valpolicella & Friuli
Our next visit was the wines of Groupo Italiano Vini (GIV) which completed the acquisition of Bolla in 2008. Over lunch (risotto with Amarone and more delights) we tasted through the Valpolicella Classico and two 2004 Amarone, one from Seccal and one from Ambrosan with the cheese course. Bissoli, responsible for exports. And New York?

Q/A with Dennis Cakebread of Cakebread Cellars
Park Avenue Spring was a wonderful venue to showcase the wines - a creamy 2008 Chardonnay with a long crisp finish that paired well with the oyster, refreshing 2008 Sauvignon Blanc (tank-fermented and aged in neutral French Oak barrels), 2004 Pinot Noir (everyone's favorite!) 34;So what did the first winery look like?"

Boutari "Kallista" Santorini 2004 *
I opened this bottle of Boutari yesterday to celebrate the first 70 degree day of the year. It's a very nice expression of assyrtiko, Santorini's predominant grape, which I brought back from Santorini in 2006. There are some citrus notes, too, mostly lemon, and a little honey, perhaps from aging in the cellar.

2004 Napa Valley Chardonnays ***
2004 Far Niente Napa Valley Chardonnay Yellow gold. 2004 Peter Michael Mon Plaisir Gorgeously pure pale yellow gold. Overt black licorice, anise seed, and gobs of vanilla. Very pure palate, soft and moderately sweet with a very good balance, nice acidity, and moderately long, stoney finish. Hints at petrol, too.

Tomaiolo Chianti Classico Riserva 2004 **
A very perfumed, deeply colored Chianti Classico, with a rich bouquet of earth tones, tar and whole anise seed, and ripe berry medley on the palate. Starts with refreshing acidity, and finishes with well balanced tannins. One of the most enjoyable Chianti Classicos in recent memory.

2004 Merus Napa Valley **
I picked this up to celebrate the last day of law school - ever. It's hugely extracted - a black hole wine. Blackberries, violets, mild whole clove, and a little menthol. Secondary flavors include semi sweet cocoa and vanilla. But there's an aggressive spice, too, which isn't integrated, and the wine is a tad heady/hot.

2004 Dom. A. Clape Cornas ***
Opaque plum, medium viscosity. Prune, fresh herbs, and graphite on the nose. Black berry, black currant, and freshly ground black pepper complete this texturally equisite syrah. Totall restrained still, but spicy, loamy, and an oaky finish that goes a nice long time, buoyed by fine sweet tannin. This is a wine to find, drink, love, and dream about

Flowers Estate Bottled Chardonnay "Camp Meeting Ridge" Sonoma Coast 2004 **
Light honey. Almond, honey and hazelnut are primary, with a mild lemon-caper-sauce backbone and you get the sense of yellow flowers - dandelions? This was probably best last year and has turned the corner evolutionarily, but it's good to see these wines on the other side of paradise. It's still singing

DuMOL Chardonnay "isobel" Green Valley Sonoma County 2004 ***
Grapefruit and white peaches on the nose. Clean, grassy, some loamy like texture and black licorice on the mid-note. This is exquisite. A Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru California white. With an apple cider precision on the minute-long finish

Josephine Dubois Chablis Grand Cru "Les Clos" 2004 *
White gold. Honey and white flowers on the nose. The palate is a little heavy with honey and melon, but there is a lemon-citrus element that makes this satisfyingly refreshing. This is certainly a crowd pleaser

Dom. Jean-Paul Balland Sancerre 2004 **
Straw color. There's gorgeous mellow oak, citrus and tropical notes here, but the mid-note is light, citrus-heavy, a touch grassy, with flint and steel. It's light, refreshing, and bright, even at 4 years old. This has another 1 or 2 years to go to flesh out before it reaches an apogee, but right now, it is beautiful in its precision

2004 Pax “Venus North Coast **
From 152 cases of 100% Roussanne, this wine has experienced a rather tragic dumb phase since the phenomenal days of its release. Bright gold color, with mild purple wild flowers on the nose, refreshing but not overt or tangy in the mouth, with green pear and white chocolate flavors. This has never tasted better
