    The 2009 Pinot Noir “Dierberg” sees some whole cluster and has tingly tannins with appealing red fruit and a snap of acidity.     Feudi del Pisciotto Versace Nero d'Avola IGT 2009
    Made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes fermented in stainless steel, aged in barriques (50% new, 50% used) for 10 months with another 6 months in bottle. Expressively intense and fruit forward, with pretty aromas of blackberry pie, fruit compote and baked strawberry, while flavors are on the sweet side of dry with bing cherry and hints of blue fruits.

    Viña Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
    Here we have a Cabernet Sauvignon from the Colchagua valley in Chile, produced by DOMAINES BARONS DE ROTHSCHILD-LAFITE who took over the Los Vascos estate (Los Vascos meaning The Basques, in honour of its Basque origins) in 1988. There is much going on here for under $10. This wine has a deep and dark ruby red color.

    G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2009
    I think the best way to describe this wine is just to say that it is an Italian Beaujolais. If opened blind, that is how I would have described it. Aromas of candy cherry licorice with just a hint of smoke. Much like a French Beaujolais on the nose and not much different in the mouth, with a very long fruity finish and a touch of sweetness.

    Visiting H. Stagmari in Uruguay
    Tannat Viejo 2009. This winery started in 1991 by Mr. Stagmari and they grow many different varietals that have won numerous awards, especially for Tannat. From the start the focus was on quality, beginning with limiting density in the vineyards (one meter by one meter). As you can see from the photo above the wines have won many awards.

    A Family Winery: Meeting Juan Marichal of Marichal wines
    Tannat 2009. “My 82 year old granny lives here,” says dark haired Juan Andres Marichal, pointing to a simple, one  story house near the tiny family winery. Many years ago she would cook three meals a day for the workers.”. The winery itself is small too … in the old days, the family would sell the grapes, yet in 1938. Good with meat.

    Bogle Old Vine Zinfandel 2009
    That day they were featuring Bogle wines, so I picked up a 2008 Petite Sirah( $9 ) and a 2009 Old Vine Zin( $10 ). A few weeks ago, while out shopping, I passed by a local wine shop that I haven't been to in quite a few years. The '08 Petite Sirah was a little tamer with a little more fruit aroma and taste. That was a great move.

    An Evening at Smith Haut Lafitte
    the white Chateau Smith Lafitte 2009 served with the 1999 with foie gras terrine, and the Chateau Smith Lafitte Red 2000 Magnum served with the 1990 Magnum with entrecote steak.  It was especially important to pay close attention to the tannins.".     Energy in the wines at the Return to Terroir
    Michel Lafarge Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 2009 was the best I’ve had of that wine in a few vintages. And his Volnay Vendanges Selectionnees 2009 showed really well.     A Revisit of the Marchesi de Frescobaldi Nipozzano Chianti Rufina Riserva 2006 DOCG
    The palate in 2009 was "complex and runs the gamut from black cherry pie topped with powdered sugar to black plum and raspberries, to spice and cocoa powder to smoke and licorice". The price I paid for the bottle in 2009 was about $20 and I found this bottle last week for $17 at Deegan's in Richmond Hill, a very good price for this wine.

    Let's go back to Sicily for another terrific Nero D'Avola! This is a great little bottle of Villa Cutò that I found at Deegan's in Woodhaven, Queens for about $8. Garnet red clean colors with resinous aromas of plum, vanilla, and raspberry, under vegetal notes. also warm cherry pie, and on the palate more plums, red cherry and minute hints of spice.

    Tenuta Rapitala Campo Reale Nero D'Avola 2009 IGT Sicily
    Nero D'Avola is one of my favorite Sicilian grapes because of its power and typical in-your-face attitude. Dark ruby red clean colors, fragrant aromas of raspberry pie, ripe fruit, with floral notes, flavors of ripe cherries with good balance and finish. 11/bottle. The grapes: 100% Nero d'Avola. This produces a structured, soft and balanced wine.

    Hirsch Vineyards has the ebullient, crackling Bohan Dillon 2009 , a 13.1% The French have a wine term that doesn’t translate. No, it’s not terroir. It’s vin de soif. wine that’s thirst-quenching is a fun drink that accompanies food or a moment but doesn’t dominate them. It’s lowish in alcohol and in price.

The whites have a pleasant bitter finish that ends with a decisive finish. they are not "fruity" in the New World sense of the word. The reds are also milder than most New World reds.

    Il Borro Lamelle Chardonnay 2006 IGT
    The first time I tried this wine in 2009, this Chardonnay from the Ferragamo family's Tuscan vineyards, Il Borro had a pale yellow color. now after a few years in cellar it's a deeper golden. The fruity rich aromas of apple and peach are still present with notes of floral & lemon, but the oak has mellowed considerably.

    The 2009 Bourgogne wines, made from mostly purchased grapes, are both solid examples of Burgundy under $20. The 2009 Clos des Myglands, a premier cru from Mercurey, offers good depth, acidity and a tannic structure that provides intrigue.     When I got home I found that UPS had delivered just what I was looking for, a Terrazas de los Andes Malbec Reserva 2009. Last week I came home from work at the usual time (10:15pm) just wanting a nice red wine to sip on, with maybe a few bites of cheese or chocolate.     Damiani Wine Cellars semi-dry Riesling 2010
    ham and swiss sandwich, a cheese or sausage pizza, a garden salad and maybe even a burger and fries, if you love white wines with your meal, the Damiani 2009 semi-dry Riesling is a can't go wrong choice. Forget the relaxing, but three out of four is not bad. Nice and soft mouthfeel with some Finger Lakes mineral, lime and green apple.

    Montebuena Rioja 2009.( I've posted earlier that Rioja is my favorite or at least one of my favorite autumn wines.     liked the 2009 Chardonnay , which is from Hawkes Bay. The 2009 Syrah (99% Syrah, 1% Viognier) is selected from old vines, hand picked, de-stemmed, and tipped directly into a five tonne open top vat. The 2009 Sauvignon Blanc is crafted for the 'table not the bar" with orange peel flavors overlying a pure tropical melon base.

    Last month on my first return to Dr Frank's since then, I was not going to leaving without their latest vintage, the 2009( $30 ). Although still a fantastic wine, the 2009 vintage falls somewhat short of the '07 and yet still is one of the best red wines found in the Finger Lakes. don't collect wines and I don't cellar wines.

    My favorites were Domaine Lucie & Auguste Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2009 with its full, rich, concentrated flavors (and also the Lucie/Lignier Gevrey Chambertin "Les Seuvrees" 2009) along with the Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2008.     very nice wine, but not on a par with the 2009 Old Vines. The Hudson-Chatham Old Vines Baco Noir 2009($ 28 ) is one of the best New York red wines I have tasted in a long time. The weather finally cooled down enough on Sunday to enjoy a day on the Patio standing over the grill. It is Columbia County's first winery. and parts of Canada.

    July Wines - a Laundry List
    2009 Guy Bossard Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine Expression de Granite , $18, Chartrand Imports. At this point, my favorite Muscadet of the 2009 vintage. This is what we drank with the pasta and artichokes in the previous post, and it was a shockingly good pairing with the pungent dish. Fantastic wine and worth searching out.

    Heron Hill dry Riesling 2009( $14 ) Color was nice, light straw and very bright. It's Friday night and I find my self getting a little ahead on the reviews. Normally, I like to drink four or five or more wines per week and then pick one for a weekly review. nice, nice citrusy finish made this a perfect white wine to beat the heat.

    Red Newt Cellars Semi-Dry Riesling 2009
    Close to 100F today, but feels like 120F. Can't remember last time we had this long of a heat wave in Central New York. What it does mean though, is I get to chill some Finger Lakes Riesling to enjoy in the air-conditioned family room and that all outdoor yard work is cancelled till another day. Color was a very light yellow, almost clear.
