A WINE STORY Visit to Mas Amiel in the Roussillon
| FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2017

Like many other students in the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) educational program, the subject of fortified wine is an actual course in itself. It was necessary to study all the different styles of fortified wine, from Sherry to Maury to Port. Each region specializing in fortified wine has its own unique character, yet Mas Amiel from Maury is unique.

A WINE STORY Visit to Fattoria Fibbiano in Pisa

The 2009 was one of my favorites, with very sweet ripe tannins. “You MUST see the soil and vineyards on a clear, sunny day,” says Matteo Cantoni, an energetic and charismatic man with a very genuine manner and movie star good looks. Though we had been scheduled to see one of Fattoria Fibbiano’s most famous old vineyards on a Saturday, the forecast for rain had us rush to see the vineyard while it was in full harvest.
A WINE STORY Visiting San Gervasio Winery in Pisa

During dinner, we had some of the estate’s top end wines, including the I Renai 2005 Merlot (very Pomerol like with 14 months of aging in French barrique), the 2009 Cabernet Savignon (incredibly delicious) and two styles of Vin Santo, my favorite being the 2001. “Welcome!” says friendly, red-headed Lisa Tommasini, whose family owns the San Gervasio winery in Pisa.

A WINE STORY Visting Il Mosel in Franciacorta
| SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2015
FRANCIACORTA DOCG ROSE PAS DOSE PAROSE 2009. Very interesting visit to Il Mosnel, a beautiful 16th century winery in Franciacorta that has basically been with the same family for hundreds of years. The name Il Mosnel means “stone hill.” The winery gets its name for two reasons: first, the soil in this area is full of pebbles. Second, the founding family had thousands of stones removed when they were building the winery, assembling the stones in the shape of a small hill.
A WINE STORY Visiting Ferhettina Winery in Franciacorta
| WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 2015
Franciacorta Pas Dose Riserva 33 DOCG 2009. So I am here at the Ferghettina winery in Franciacorta, where winemaker Felippo Rossi is showing us around. This gorgeous estate was built in 2003 yet is designed in a way to resemble the Old World. Roberto Gatti bought 10,000 acres in this region, built a strong reputation running a small winery, bought more land and in 2005 the present modern day Ferghettina winery was opened for business.

2009 Franciacorta Soul Saten – enticing aroma of fresh strawberries and cream, salmon color, fast moving bubbles, long finish of strawberries stone and slight cream. 2009 recently discourged after 60 months on lees … fresh with strong atmospheric pressure. I have a doozy here for you this Friday: Clos de la Roilette, Fleurie, 2014 ( find this wine ). I’ve been a fan of the producer for a while.
DR. VINO Things heating up in Europe
| MONDAY, JUNE 29, 2015
This pamphlet (pdf) from Australia–no stranger to heat waves with a monster one in 2009 that pushed temperatures up over 100 for 14 days–states that the main effects are a loss of crop and reduction of quality. Things are heating up in Europe–not just in Greece. A searing heatwave has the continent in its grasp. Burgundy, which is known for producing wines more winsome than boxum, will have four days in the 100s (39C+) this week–and the balance in the 90s. Yikes.

DR. VINO G.D. Vajra in Barolo – “clean traditionalist”
| THURSDAY, JULY 10, 2014
Even though they had made the wines from these Serralunga properties for a couple of vintages, 2009 was the first under their control, giving them a parcel in the Cerretta vineyard. Giuseppe Vaira was caught in a fight when he was in elementary school. It wasn’t the sort of meet-you-at-the-bike-racks kind of thing. No, it encapsulated what might happen only to the son of a winemaker, or even the son of a Barolo winemaker.
A WINE STORY “Around the World In Five Courses” with Concha Y Toro Winemaker Marcelo Papa
| TUESDAY, JUNE 10, 2014

A WINE STORY Visiting G.D. Vajra Family in Piedmont

| WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2014
The tasting revealed a feminine touch with the wines – the Classico Barolo 2009 had stainless steel fermentation for 25 days and revealed intense pure cherry fruit and long length. It’s not often you find a winemaker who looks more like an Milan-based socialite, yet Mariacristina Oddero of Oddero winery in La Morra fits the mold. Beyond Mariacristina’s charm, the first thing one notices is the gorgeous “L-shaped” house/winery at the top of the hill and the tall green trees in the driveway.
A WINE STORY Exploring Pio Cesare
| WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2014
Now lunch is a big deal in Piedmont, and at the table we tried the barrel fermented white 2011 Piodilei Chardonnay, 2009 Barbaresco Vendennia Bricco di Treiso (whose vineyard I saw along the way) and some aged Barolo wines. Augusto Boffa is a man who likes to drive fast, hugging the vine-filled curves of the tiny hillside road that runs from the winery in downtown Alba to the pretty outdoor La Contea restaurant in Nieve.
A WINE STORY Experieincing Massolino winery in Serralunga d’Alba
| MONDAY, MAY 19, 2014
I tried the 2010 and 2009 Barolo Vigna Margheria side by side - what a treat! 2009 was a warm hot vintage and of the two, was my personal preference. I also tried the 2010 and 2009 Barolo Parafada side by side which had flavors of black cherry, violets, and lavender as well as plum. Sometimes you just get lucky in life. The gentlemen above has the challenging - yet interesting - job of being a combination host/educator for the Massolino family in Serralunga d''Alba.

2009) and “Burgundy-influenced.” The “Cuvée MMIX” (2009) was a tad ripe for me (Rhone-ish, if you will), but the “Cuvée MMXI” (2011) more successfully combines the ripeness of the wine with intriguing structure. Mathieu Lapierre said that the 2013 showed more “Burgundy influence.” At the Kermit Lynch portfolio tasting in New York yesterday, he elaborated briefly that given the location of Beaujolais, vintages can oscillate between “Rhone-influenced” (e.g.

| THURSDAY, MARCH 27, 2014
My old friend Gary Grunner has been in the wine business for a long time, and for whatever reason we lost touch over the past year… so I wasn''t at all surprised when I ran into him recently and he gave me a bottle of his own label, the Hansen/Grunner Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. He always said he wanted to produce his own wine, but knowing Gary, he needed all his ducks in a row first. The wait was worth it. He and his partner Jeff Hansen have created a winner here.
A WINE STORY Exploring Conegliano Valdobbiadene: The Land of Prosecco Superior
| MONDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2014
In 2009, the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area obtained D.O.C.G. "Prosecco?" the gentlemen asks, a bit startled by my question about it''s "image." "It''s sexy, cool, a fun sparkler to order in a bar," he responds. Yes, Prosecco today has a super sexy image, and why not? It has that great Italian name that rolls off the tongue and conjurs up images of romance, an exotic locale, and a charming, good looking population. Yet there is more to Prosecco than its image.

2009 Sonoma USA Bright cherry color. Unassuming and restrained aromas. Not as ripe and jolly rancher as I remember from a past vintage. In fact it''s just delightful: shows great red berry and colas flavors. Lite briar and earth undertones with rising acidity. At Spruce.
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE An Evening with the Champagnes of Benoît Lahaye
| WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2013
Here are the wines we drank, along with some notes (we found everything except for the Brut Nature and the Blanc de Noirs): Benoît Lahaye Champagne Brut Essential (I''m not sure of the base year here, but I believe it was 2009) - as one might expect, this turned out to the the most accessible of the wines on the table, but hours later as we revisited the wines, it was the one that held up the best on this evening of strange fluctuations in humidity and air pressure.
A WINE STORY Visit to Emile Pepe Winery, Abruzzo
| SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2013
We taste many of the vintage wines, including an interesting comparison between the 2009 and 2002 Tribbiano, both aged in oak and curiously both from rather rainy vintages. Extremely exciting visit to this family-run winery, which ‘officially’ had its debut in 1964, when Emile Pepe (son of a longtime winemaking family, who primarily grew grapes) went off on his own and began to bottle wine.

2012, 2010, 2009 Charmes Chambertin ?Clos “In 2012 Mother Nature made the selection,” says Dominique Gallois, in response to my question about the intense concentration of the basic Bourgogne rouge, which I attributed to low yields and careful selection. This is my second visit to this estate, and now I can confirm that there is something very special about Dominique and a visit to his cellar.

A WINE STORY Visiting Billecart-Salmon in Champagne
| THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013
We taste a prime example of this oak influence later in the visit as we sip and reflect on the NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Sous Bois, made from the 2009 and 2010 vintages from the three grape varieties in equal parts: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. Welcome!" says gregarious Antoine Roland-Billecart, gliding down the 19th century staircase with the good looks and confidence of a sports star. On the stairwell wall behind him are oval, gilt-framed portraits of his ancestors.

VIGNA UVA VINO Malleolus 2009, Bodegas Emilio Moro
| TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2013
A very lively red from Ribera del Duero in Spain, a Bordeaux style, dark brooding colors in the glass, aromas of raw wood and torn bark, black fruits with a certain minerality, big round flavors and the raw wood is deceptively missing, intense concentration of ripe cherries, spice and a hint of sweetness. Silky tannins and long smooth finish

Here is another beauty from the Ribera del Duero region of Spain where the 2009 vintage was reportedly a very good one, and this Tempranillo reflects that. After initial fermentation aged for 18 months in French oak. Deep bluish red colors with red cherry, blue fruits, violets and deep earthy aromas, mushroom or truffle-like, more flavors of red fruits, red licorice candy and exotic eucalyptus, on top an herbal mint/lavender cast.

France 2009 Burgundy What a gorgeous aroma when removing the cork, like buttered popcorn and cotton candy. Deep rose color. Mildly briney; very fresh. Tannin as it opens in the front, but very soft, mild eucalyptus (?!) and a touch of new oak. Balanced much more towards the front of the mouth than on the finish, which is incredibly light and short (my only complaint) but the word ephemeral springs to mind, which is rare for me. French perfume! That''s what that scent is.

USA 2009 Napa Valley An estate wine from McGah Family Vineyard, Rutherford. I love the name, and the label. Deep Burgundy color. Very smokey and spicey-sweet aromas. Primal and rather full tannin. Exhibits a nice Rutherford-dust typicality that reminds me of GIII wines. Black cherry cola, celery seed. Quite concentrated. Needs at least another year, and will be best after 2017.
A WINE STORY Tasting Notes Week of 8/26/13
| WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28, 2013
2009 Chateau Boutisse (Bordeaux). Very impressed by this wine - near black opaque color, delicious nose of black cherry, black licorice, repeated on the palate along with black earth. Dry wine with medium racy acidity, smooth yet slightly grainy tannin, and medium alcohol (13%). Lots of finesse and rich ripe fruit. 1975 La Grange. Of course, a bit past its prime, but interesting snapshot of the time. It opened nicely, held its structure for a good hour. Wine reviews

DR. VINO What’s the point? Chateau Montrose edition
| WEDNESDAY, JULY 24, 2013
Here’s an interesting chart from the folks at Liv-Ex : Chateau Montrose 2009 is valued at $1,400 more a case than Montrose 2010. The 09 surged when Parker gave it 100 points. The price did not move on the Suckling 100-point score). But the ’10 stayed flat with 99 points. Clearly, a score of 99 ain’t what it used to be! I haven’t tasted the two vintages of Montrose in question, but in some other comparisons of 09 vs 2010, I preferred the 2010s.
VIGNA UVA VINO Esporao Reserva Red 2009, Portugal

WHY WINE BLOG Allegrini Estates Wines
| TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2013
Very Highly Recommended The Valpolicella, I thought, would be hard to follow, but the Allegrini La Grola 2009 (SRP $28) was so much more impressive. Just have to add an Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2009 (SRP $16) a blend of 70% Corvina Veronese, 25% Rondinella and 5% Sangiovese. I recently realized that for someone who grew up on Italian wines, I have seemed to cast them aside over the past five years. Until I started blogging, I think I believed that wines were only made in Italy.

Anne-Laure and oenologue/brand manager Nicolas Haeffelin were in Manhattan to showcase their Grand Cru wines, which astonishingly perfectly made. After asking for 5 different wines that turned out not to be available, I took the guy''s recommendation and drank a glass of 2009 Puffeney Savagnin. Seafood was uniformly excellent. Service was uniformly friendly and competent.
