VIGNA UVA VINO | MONDAY, APRIL 14, 2008 Halleck Vineyards Clone 828 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006 couldn't try them all but one that really stood out was the Halleck Vineyards Clone 828 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006. Today, at a tasting at the Waldorf Astoria given by Martin Scott Wines , I had the opportunity to sample over 50 Pinot Noirs. 828 is an individual clone and individual vineyard near Annapolis, about two hours north. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SUNDAY, APRIL 13, 2008 La Crema Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2006 California This California Pinot Noir aged in French oak for 7 months opens with aromas of ripe black cherry, little hints of chocolate & vanilla, wood and spicy clove. Well, today is not only April Fool's Day, it's also my dog's birthday, (which is why I named her "April" 13 years ago.) And we have a little tradition today, she and I.I By the way, my butcher, Staubitz, is a genius in an apron.) gorgeous wine -
SLAKED | MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2008 2005 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville Zinfandel ** For a 2005 Sonoma Zinfandel, this is a very interesting wine with a solid tannic backbone. The 2005 Ridge Vineyards Geyserville Zinfandel ** is a restrained and foreboding wine at first blush. The wine evolves with aeration, providing banana, colada, sweet vanilla, blueberry and light, mellow red licorice notes -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2008 Skurnik Tasting - my favorites (finally) Beginning with their '06 "Sonoma Coast Estate" Chardonnnay, I found very nice subtle oak combined with nice citrus notes and fresh crisp flavors. Next was a wine from Etude Wines in Carneros, which runs South of both Napa & Sonoma counties. I've mentioned this event twice and have promised to write a more comprehensive review. -
SLAKED | TUESDAY, MARCH 18, 2008 2005 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Springs Zinfandel ** Dark plum turning cherry at the rim. Mild lavendar and raspberry leaves on the nose, but very restrained. Full throttle acidity and then the mild fruits emerge - dark fruits, mulberries, sour plum and sour cherry. There's dried flowers here too, and bay leaf, with a coarse texture. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 2008 Castle Rock 2006 Sonoma County Pinot Noir photo ©2008 by Dave TriegerThis California light ruby red is a Pinot Noir with fruity aromas and spices, and on the palate is cherry jam, plum a tinge of white pepper and oak. SLAKED | FRIDAY, MARCH 7, 2008 2005 Ridge Vineyards Old School Zinfandel Alexander Valley Bright dense purple and cola syrup color. Good depth of fruit on the nose with menthol, mellow cherry and light red licorice notes. Extraordinary concentration by day 2: Coconut and mellow vanilla, pina colada-esque, with unidentifiable blue fruit notes shining through. -
SLAKED | SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2008 2005 Dashe Louvau Vineyard Zinfandel Old Vines Dry Creek Valley * Translucent plum. Red berries and candied apple predominates. Very well balanced acidity reminds me of fresh tomato sauce in texture and balance. Light spice on exit -
SLAKED | SUNDAY, MARCH 2, 2008 2005 Ridge Vineyards Carmichael Zinfandel * Light ruby. Extraordinarily pinot-esque. Mellow ripe cranberry, red jolly ranchers and light spices with a very mineral midpalate. This is nicely balanced but it's still too early to show real tannic structure. Apparently, these aromas can be indicative of something called mercaptan , which is generally considered a fault in wine. liked this. -
SLAKED | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2008 2003 Ridge Vineyards Lytton East Zinfandel * Notice the wine dripping down the side of this bottle? Yeah - it's that good. Deep nearly opaque purple with minor iridescence. Gorgeous mint and strawberry notes. Evergreen, mint, red currant and vanilla with mixed blueberry/strawberry finish. smooth loamy texture reminds me of a velvety Wahington State merlot. Awesome -

WINE TASTING GUY | THURSDAY, JANUARY 10, 2008 Going GREEN with your wine drinking Holding the growing method, winery practices and bottle size constant, it is more carbon-efficient for people in Connecticut to drink a bottle of wine from Bordeaux than from Sonoma. I'll be heading into the Judean Hills region today but I wanted to put together a real quick post before leaving. Napa Valley wine can emit 2.6 GOOD QUESTION! | |
