The 2008 Monte Bello will (probably) be made from just cabernet sauvignon and merlot for the first time in twenty-five years. The 2007 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay (which recently received 93 points from Wine Spectator) is lightly steely with minor tropical fruit and strawberry-bubblegum notes. There is no short answer. Cruz Mtn. Maybe it's because of all the cheap French wines we've been drinking this week, but I keep thinking about this Sta. Estate 58% cabernet sauvignon and 42% merlot blend from Ridge Vineyards that we drank last week. This is no Monte Bello, but for a $30 bottle of meritage, this wine has it all. MORE >> -
