And This Time It's Personal In the spring of 2008 I learned that the winemaking prodigy behind Pax Wine Cellars, monsieur Pax Mahle, was leaving the eponymously named venture and striking out on his own, once again. and a 2006 Sonoma Coast Syrah Prices range from $32 to $45, about 30% less than Pax Wine Cellars. Great stuff! | WINE TASTING GUY APRIL 30, 2008 Polaner tasting standouts also very much enjoyed the 2005 A-R Cab "Bugay" from Sonoma which was treated with 100% new A-R oak and had a nice complex nose showing mocha and black fruit. winery whose wines surprised me & whose winemaker, Mike Officer, I enjoyed speaking with was Carlisle Winery from Sonoma. don't know. SLAKED | FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2008 2005 Nickel & Nickel Manzana Vineyard RRV Pinot Noir * From the back label: "Dutton Ranch planted the Manzana Vineyard on a gently sloped hillside in the Russian River Valley. The name 'Manzana", [sic] Spanish for apple, honors the long heritage of apple orchards here." The label goes on to describe how the "cool climate" produces slowly yet fully ripened fruit, blah blah blah. MORE >> -

SLAKED | WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2008 Kistler Dutton Ranch Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2004 Impetuous color, whatever that means. Kistler's RRV chardonnays routinely elude description, and this one does just that: Honey, amber notes, with rich minerality and steely grip. SLAKED | SATURDAY, JULY 5, 2008 Pax Syrah Kobler Family Vineyard Russian River Valley 2004 ** Blackberry and purple color with blackberry and rich, round peppercorns on the nose. Nicely fleshy and robust in the mouth, with pepper and licorice notes. Silky and mildly sweet on the finish MORE >> -
SLAKED | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2, 2008 2005 Kosta Browne RRV Pinot Noir * This Russian River Valley Pinot was in Spectator's top 5 for 2007 - I think it was their #3 wine of the year actually - and while I don't quite share that level of enthusiasm, this wine clearly stands out from the pack of California Pinot Noir, and is probably the best wine from here I've ever had.
