But as the wine industry has matured (vineyards & wine making techniques have improved) and customers have become more sophisticated, the wines of Gamla have improved by leaps and bounds. I have been asked by countless people which wines I would recommend they check out for Passover, so I thought it appropriate to blog for the masses. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 2 Wine tasting events - Part 2 When speaking to many people in the industry, their love of wine and passion for it is very evident. The first wine tasting event I attended today was a portfolio tasting for Skurnik wines. was invited as a perspective customer (as I work on moving forward with the Wine bar project) and was very happy to have been included. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19, 2008 Update - 2 different wine tastings today The first is an industry tasting being held by a large & very well regarded NYC distributor. I'm sorry my posts have been both abreviated and infrequent of late. I'm keeping mighty busy working on my (not so) top secret Israeli wine project. And as if that did not keep me busy enough, I'll be attending 2 wine tastings today. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 2008 The 6 wine consumer segments Constellation encourages the wine industry to pay more attention to the "overwhelmed" and "traditionalist" categories especially to ultimately increase their consumption and prompt them to try new brands and varietals. . . A very interesting piece I found via Wine and Spirits Daily , written by Megan Haverkorn. . OVERWHELMED. IMAGE SEEKERS. -
WINE TASTING GUY | THURSDAY, MARCH 6, 2008 Wine expert - what are the qualifications?? I attended a wine event this evening. It was a charitable event featuring Israeli wines - my passion as those of you who have been reading for a while know. know one of the organizers and asked if he wanted my assistance. He was happy to have me & informed me that he planned the event with some other people who are connected to Israeli wines. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 4, 2008 Wine Bar - do wine glasses (AKA stemware) matter? realize that as I have immersed myself in this industry I have become quite particular. I went to a wine bar last night and there were a few things that disturbed me about this place. The first, which I don't want to get too deeply into is how they handled a "taste". Before purchasing a bottle I like to taste what I am considering buying. -
WINE TASTING GUY | MONDAY, MARCH 3, 2008 BOOOO - Gambero Rosso Tre Bicchieri 2008 tasting It was recommended by an industry contact so although I am quite busy I made the trip crosstown to try and taste through some wines. Well, I had hoped to follow up my very positive Alto Adige tasting with a successful Gambero Rosso tasting. And then I was hit with IT - the PRETENTIOUS people. was out of there faster than you can say "VINO". -
WINE TASTING GUY | SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2008 Casual wine tasting I hope I was able to shed a more positive light on industry people to this person. A real quickie today. friend threw a very casual wine tasting at his place on Saturday night. He bought about 12 bottles, I brought over 4 and people brought their own. No theme to the tasting, just grab a glass and pour yourself some stuff. -
WINE TASTING GUY | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2008 Another rude sommelier It is guys like this who perpetuate the intimidation of the industry and have people instead choosing spirits or beer over wine - fearing that their lack of knowledge combined with people like that are going to make them feel stupid. I went out with a young lady to a wine bar last night. But that is NOT what stood out most about last night. -
WINE TASTING GUY | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2008 Kosher Food & Wine Event will readily admit that there was a time before I made the transition to the wine industry that I would have been thrilled with an event like this. The event took place at the Puck building this past Wednesday evening. What can I say? was disappointed. The hall was too dark to evaluate color. And the crowds. ARGHHHH! It was a social scene. -
ALICE FEIRING | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas February 19, 2008 The Climate Change in Spain, was a rather emotional panel. He fumed at the EUs stupidity for not allowing the Spanish wine industry to "adjust for global warming." wolfgang wolfgang on February 19, 2008 06:53 PM Rants are always welcome here! Meg on February 23, 2008 06:11 PM Post a comment -
ALICE FEIRING | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas Hank on February 16, 2008 04:09 PM Post a commentGlobal Warming not only means a warmer earth in parts but also wildly unpredictable climates, something business, as they dont have souls of farmers, cant deal with. FYI, while I like Ernie Loosen from the Mosel loads, he came the closest to a natural wine maker in the room and the panels. -
WINE TASTING GUY | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008 wine bar BARTENDER - what is he/she there for? But what good are these wine bars if the people doing the "serving" within this service industry are cold & useless servers?? I went out to a relatively new wine bar last night with a few friends on the Upper West Side (of Manhattan). Nothing special about the place. No warm smile. No offer for help. Nothing. Almost like a PR person. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2008 Israeli wine tasting - Castel & Binyamina Eli gave an insightful talk about Israeli wines, the Israeli terroir, industry and varying winery philosophies. The Kosher Wine Society hosted a tasting tonight with Israeli winemakers from the Castel & Binyamina wineries. The evening started with a 2004 Sauvignon Blanc from the Binyamina winery. Castel's Chard is very well regarded. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Chateauneuf-Du-Pape tasting at Tribeca Grill This was not one of those HUGE industry tastings. No wonder so many people have for so long spoken of the pretension of the wine industry. This afternoon I attended a fabulous Chateauneuf du Pape (CDP for simplicity) tasting at The Tribeca Grill in downtown Manhattan. It was not a packed open to public tasting. quick note about CDP. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Expressing The Truth Behind the Varietal The bulk of Sicilian wine history is in the industrialized mass production of wine that was solely meant as a blending agent in northern Italian wines to soften the edges. From the south I chose to wax on wax off about the Nero d'Avola. Five years ago Sicily was not even close to being seen as a legit wine-producing region. and at In Vino. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Corvina: It's Not Just For Amarone Anymore Oh and the Veneto is one of the more industrialized of the Italian regions. The next wine I want to talk about is really cool. This region has got a lot going on. Its capitol is Venice, which was at one time the most important cities in Europe for trade and commerce and is the most visited city in all of Italy, which.I concur. -
ALICE FEIRING | FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas February 01, 2008 Its unbelievable how they got away with it, but annual Unified Wine and Grape Symposium in Sacramento, California went on without me. As long as that industry runs around courting the market and not making wine from the gut, they are going to lose. Jeremy Parzen on February 1, 2008 07:39 PM Alice, love this post. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2008 Casa Marguery Malbec: Bringing the Past to the Present and Into the Future Actually, Mendoza was founded in 1561 and from the late 1500's to about the early 1800's a domestic, commercial wine industry blossomed to the north in a city called San Juan and subsequently spread south. The country's wine industry was being formed but only on a domestic level. The word Malbec is being heard more and more these days. -
WINE TASTING GUY | MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2008 The BATTLE for direct shipping rages on While I recently posted about wine.com and their "sting operation" to turn in retailers who are supposedly illegally shipping wine I just came across a very HEATED & interesting interview conducted by one of my most trusted wine industry sources, Megan Haverkorn of Wine & Spirits Daily. link]. That is the American way. TOM: Yes. -
WINE TASTING GUY | FRIDAY, JANUARY 25, 2008 Wine Australia Festival - wrap up Yesterday, January 24th, jet lagged and feeling a bit under the weather, I attended the Wine Australia Festival in NY's Wall St Cipriani. just to name a few. While I know this seems quite snobby, and may have been, I am about to make a confession. By my compatriots calculation we tried about 75 wines each - within 3 hours. Didn't work well. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2008 DRINKING A 2005 BENSON FERRY OLD VINE ZINFANDEL WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND This led to the 1991 formation of ZAP (Zinfandel Advocates and Producers) formed primarily by Croatian-born California winemaker Mike Grgich who made his bones in the US wine industry by winning the top white wine honor in the 1976 "Judgment of Paris" with his 1973 Chardonnay (it wasn't only red being judged). in most wine). Charles M. -
WINE TASTING GUY | THURSDAY, JANUARY 17, 2008 Blogging from the Israel Wine World I've been thinking a lot about what to blog about tonight and two controversial issues come to mind, relating to the following two topics: 1 - Internet sales of wine 2 - Wine ratings/reviews The first, internet sales of wine has come up as there is presently a very exciting project underway to sell Israeli wines online. But higher scores???? | |
