But as cheap 2008 Bordeaux threatens to flood our shores, I am eager to defend American producers in difficult times. had thought that, after Bordeaux released 2008 prices at up to 40% off 2007, our own Cult Wine producers would give us a break. For a quick taste of how the other half drinks, check out a piece that I wrote for Forbes.com. Ah, perhaps we need an impossible wine-place pairing: the office!

Pax is Back. And This Time It's Personal
In the spring of 2008 I learned that the winemaking prodigy behind Pax Wine Cellars, monsieur Pax Mahle, was leaving the eponymously named venture and striking out on his own, once again. Rumor had it that disagreements with co-owner(?) and world renowned collector Joe Donelan led to the (what may be termed in retrospect) inevitable split.

    1988 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello
From 95% cabernet sauvignon, with 3% merlot and 2% petit verdot.makes me think they should add 2% petit verdot to the final blend of the 2008, in an attempt to recreate the longevity of the sweetness here. This wine put the 1989 to shame. Oppulently opaque, but this is most likely mature. Left a hefty amount of black residue in the bottle.

    2008 Monte Bello Futures Tasting
The 2008 Monte Bello will (probably) be made from just cabernet sauvignon and merlot for the first time in twenty-five years. The 2007 Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay (which recently received 93 points from Wine Spectator) is lightly steely with minor tropical fruit and strawberry-bubblegum notes. There is no short answer.

Truth and fiction: Ross Schwartz, screenwriter of Bottle Shock, the movie
It loosely depicts the events of the Paris tasting of 1976 when a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and a Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon surprised the wine world by beating their French peers in a blind tasting. So Ross Schwartz told the assembled group at the Symposium for Professional Wine Writers in Napa last week.
