Domaine Bernard Baudry , “Les Granges,&# Chinon 2007. Oh, and they’re tasty and balanced.

By the Glass - Burgundy Complaints Edition
It is almost cliché to say that Burgundy is a crap shoot, every bottle a roll of the dice. If you're into Burgundy, you know I'm not kidding or exaggerating. do exactly the same thing when buying Burgundy wine in the $20-40 zone, the range that I tend to live in. But that's because it's true. Yes, laugh with me at that price.

Bernard Baudry in 06 and 07
So far I really like the 2007's in the Loire. They remind me of 2007 in Burgundy - the opposite of a blockbuster vintage. It was fascinating to taste Bernard Baudry's 2006 and 2007 Clos Guillot next to one another. The 2007 is a completely different wine. As the vines become older, watch out! Or maybe cheese.

But I want to continue to drink fantastic wine.

    Pierre Yves Colin-Morey
Almost two weeks ago at the Michael Skurnik Grand Portfolio Tasting I tasted through Pierre Yves Colin-Morey's lineup of beautiful white Burgundies and it was really an amazing experience. Tasting through the lineup was a lesson in Burgundy terroir, and I've not before experienced that in an industry tasting environment. Aubin.

He told Mary that I would be in Burgundy and boom - we had an invite to Domaine des Croix for dinner. She served an excellent 2007 Albert Mann Riesling Schlossberg Grand Cru with a lively green salad, and a dark and stormy, and still probably too young, but layered and delicious 1999 Alain Graillot Hermitage with the boudin noir pie.

    Domaine Pierre Morey, Meursault
Perhaps the finest and most memorable lesson that I received in Burgundy terroir came at the hands of Pierre Morey. We tasted through a large range of 2007 wines from Meursault, each with its own distinct personality. Pierre Morey is considered to be one of the very finest wine makers in Burgundy. And we were thrilled and awed.

Their 2007 Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling was a perfect example of just how insidious screwcaps are for wine- this wine received 90 points from Josh Raynolds in his International Wine Cellar review in the September-October ’08 issue, and Josh has a great palate. Domaine de L'Arlot
I asked Peter Liem where Domaine de L'Arlot stands in the pantheon of Burgundy and he said "People who really know and love Burgundy love Domaine de L'Arlot." He didn't mean that you must be a vastly experienced Burgundy lover in order to appreciate them. We tasted the 2007's in barrel, many of the 2005's and 2006's in bottle.

    Barrel Tasting
I tasted about 100 wines out of barrels in three days and there was nothing whatsoever difficult about it - the 2007's are absolutely lovely, crystal clear and a pleasure to taste. Anyway, I heard on more than one occasion while in Burgundy that wine is in "a beautiful state" when in barrel right before bottling.

I've had Charolais maybe four times now, only in Burgundy, and I love how deeply beefy it is without feeling heavy. The 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin ** has evolved into a puckering villages level Burgundy, with piquant cherry notes and a texture like sharp stones. Tasted most recently in the early fall of 2007, this was not the same wine. The word that comes to mind as you sip Antonin Guyon's 2002 Gevrey-Chambertin ** is searing.

On this trip I understood how desperately little I actually know about Burgundy wine. You can expect a steady stream of these for the next few weeks.

The 2007 Saumur Chateau Foquet (separate estate, same wine maker) was quite nice, a wine made from certified organic vines just outside of the Saumur-Champigny appellation (thus the Saumur appellation) and it should be very reasonably priced. A Swing and a Miss
This happens to me most often with Burgundy wines, as I have not yet had enough Champagne to be badly burned. In Burgundy, even in a "classic" (meaning not exceptional, but not bad either) vintage, a solid producer can sell wine, even village level wine, for over $50 a bottle. But Burgundy is hit or miss, and everybody knows it.
