A WINE STORY | TUESDAY, APRIL 17, 2012 Terroirs & Talents 2012 am in Epernay at the Terroirs & Talents de Champagne tasting at the Au Restuarante Theatre. The best thing about this and also the other festivals is the focus on terroir. Their village is mostly pinot noir (pn) and I liked their 2005 brut prestige with pn and chard. Wow it is so exciting to be here and meet the growers. -

A WINE STORY | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2011 Visiting Waterkloof in South Africa Yes, it is a bit marketing-speak … yet here, seeing the set-up and the terroir, it is very believable. Mr.Boutinot’s first vintage was from the 2005 harvest, reflecting improvements in soil surveys that determined the variety, rootstocks and the trellis systems to use. “Dazzling!”. Few wineries could afford this luxury. Waterkloof. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, APRIL 3, 2011 March Wines - a Laundry List really appreciate the terroir expression in this wine, as the gamy and rocky earth of Aloxe is apparent. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2011 An Afternoon of Grand Cru Chablis The producers mostly poured their wines from the 2009 vintage, and 2009 is not a vintage that will be celebrated for its clarity and expression of terroir. This is a vintage of ripe fruit, one that appeals in the same way that 2005 appeals - the wines are delicious and perhaps will last a very long time. were brothers. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011 Comparing the 2008 and 2009 Vintages in Burgundy via Domaine Fourrier It was great on several levels - first of all, Fourrier's wines are fascinatingly terroir expressive and it is so instructive to taste them next to each other. If you are categorizing, I think that 2009 is a vintage that can be grouped with 2005 - growers achieved high levels of ripeness and did so without having to sort out a lot of grapes. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2010 What Makes a Good Vintage? Then you learn aphorisms like "good producers make good wine in all vintages," and perhaps you focus more on terroir and producers. 2005, on the other hand - a vintage of the decade. A WINE STORY | MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2010 Discovering the Wine Properties of AXA Millesimes Soil consists of the complex terroir of Villafranchian gravel over red clay and alluvial soils. The estate was called Belles Eaux because of the numerous springs around the property which run down into the Peyne River and have a unique effect on the terroir. He is here to help explain the magic of this gorgeous terroir. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2010 Domaine Filliatreau, Saumur-Champigny The wines deliciously express terroir and are modestly priced. love the Vieille Vignes, but the last vintage that I've seen here is 2005 -that was two years ago. drank a lot of 2005 Grand Vignolle, didn't love the 2006, never saw the 2007, and liked the 2008 a year ago at a Dressner tasting. This is great wine! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2010 Wild Champagnes That I Have Loved The precious few bottles I'm glad that I saved this for at least a few years (2005 is the current vintage), as it seems to be in a particularly sweet spot right now. I hung out with Peter Liem for a lot of the past two weeks. loved this rosé. And despite all of that, the wine retained a classy sense of control and finesse. Well, yes and no. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MAY 16, 2010 Santorini Dreams Become Reality Actually, this story really begins in June of 2005 when BrooklynLady and I were in Crete on our honeymoon. If you read the link to Peter's post you already know that these are old vines, and that the vineyard techniques and the terroir are unusual. remember reading it a couple of years ago and thinking "hmmm, Santorini, huh? -
Chablis Night We then enjoyed two wines from the 2005 vintage with my fish soup. 2005 is thought to be a great vintage because, as in most of France, conditions were essentially perfect. I'm not sure yet where I stand on 2005, as I've had some wines that are more about ripeness and grape character than they are about terroir. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 2010 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #4 - Inexpensive Provence Reds Wines that can offer the same level of quality as good Beaujolais or Loire red wines at those prices - delicious wines that express terroir and work perfectly with food. 2005 Domaine de Triennes Vin de Pays du Var St Auguste , $18, Imported by The Sorting Table. 2005 Château du Seuil Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence , $9, Winebow Imports. -

DR. VINO | TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2010 Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello It may sound absurd to think that a winemaker’s personality is as discernible in the glass as the terroir , but that combination of curiosity, humility, and respectful excellence comes through in the wines of Ridge Vineyards. With Paul Draper, both live and on the tshirt from Terroir wine bar in New York City. The road to Monte Bello. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Tidal Pool But the 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Grand Cru Le Clos, those bottles were an expensive mistake. In a very ripe vintage like 2005, the character of the vintage can easily overshadow the expression of terroir. When I think that I could have five bottles of this instead of two of the 2005 Fèvre's, I feel like a dunce. -
A WINE STORY | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 2010 Kingdom of Navarra visits New York Terroir of Navarra. In previous years, the emphasis has always been on the terroir, which is enormously varied. Not just the names of the regions, but their individual terroirs, the grapes planted in each, the styles employed by the winemakers, etc. Ana Laguna & Pilar Garcia-Granero. Navarra. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2009 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #2 - Poulsard 2005 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Poulsard "M," $26, Neal Rosenthal Selections. Puffeney's Poulsard is great too, regardless of how the 2005 showed on this night. Jura wines are kind of obscure, outside of the wine-geek world. Finding them requires seeking them out, your local shoppe is unlikely to carry them. Change, change, change. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2009 Tasting the Wines of Jaques Lassaigne blend of grapes from 8 parcels, this version is 72% 2006, the rest 2005. He learned that the minerality and the terroir is coming back, something that he says "happens when producers work the soil carefully instead of using traditional methods. Emmanuel says that is due to the vintage, the precocious 2005. Excellent wine. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2009 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #1 - Cour-Cheverny Not warm and easy ripening like 2005, not as bad as 2001, typical perhaps, classic. Maybe it's more of a terroir thing than a grape variety thing? Is there room for another blind tasting panel? think there is, and I'm trying to organize it. Hopefully it will be of interest to you. Our first theme is Cour-Cheverny. Just mute. -
SLAKED | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2009 Tablas Creek Sent Me This Hat, And You Should Too Having recently retasted the 2005 On The White Keys * infra , my confidence in this little producer is renewed. DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 2009 Sierra missed – the saga of Sierra Carche 2005 Guess again and behold the saga of Sierra Carche 2005. The wine on offer was the Sierra Carche 2005, a blend of Monastrell with Petit Verdot and Malbec from the off-the beaten path Spanish region of Jumilla. Please be informed that the Bodegas Murcia Sierra Carche 2005 was not “dumped on the PLCB as you have described. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2009 Wine of the Week - Terrebrune Rosé and Tapenade Probably because Bert of Wine Terroirs and I had been emailing recently about the glory of Bandol wine, and I recently re-read his post about this classic Provence pairing. The 2005, the current vintage on NYC shelves, is a completely reasonable 13% alcohol. We had 18 days straight of rain at one stretch. food processor would help. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 2009 By the Glass - Top Quality Muscadet Edition Our bottle of 2007 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet Clos des Briords was corked, sadly, as was our 2005 Luneau-Papin L D'Or. The palate was as youthful as the 2005 I had a few months ago. Domaine de la Pépière's Granite de Clisson is an example of this kind of wine - a superb wine last produced in 2005. Someone said pineapple. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, JUNE 25, 2009 Wine of the Week - Bernard Baudry's Rosé It was November of 2005, BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time. Mathieu showed us cement vats full of fermenting juice - we saw and smelled the glorious 2005's as they bubbled away, turning sugar into alcohol. Cory writes passionately about the wines he loves, and about his life in the Bay Area and beyond. -

I am just going to begin by saying the Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 is probably the best Chardonnay I have ever had. Made me feel good, I don't win that often. Drink now through 2011." -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 28, 2009 Wine of the Week - Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne think of Mugneret-Gibourg the way I think of Fourrier or Ghislaine Barthod - each well known among Burgundy lovers as rising stars, each making wines of stunning purity and grace that provide a clear window to terroir. 2006 Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg B ourgogne , $32, Michael Skurnik Imports. What about the humble Bourgogne? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MAY 26, 2009 A Special Bottle from Larmandier-Bernier Larmandier-Bernier is one of the best producers in the Côte des Blancs, making delicious wines of finesse and purity that can be thrilling in their clear expression of terroir. The thing that made this particular bottle so special is that it was disgorged in June of 2005. More than I do, anyway. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2009 Friday Night Bubbles Perhaps because some of these wine hipsters claim that the expression of terroir in Champagne is possible only in non-dosé wines. It was disgorged in February of 2008, which leads me to assume that it is based on grapes from 2005, and bottled in 2006. But it is not easy to make a good non-dosé Champagne. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2009 Technique and Terroir in the Jura One of the confusing and intriguing things about Jura wines is the distinction between technique and terroir. wonder, though, whether they are more an expression of technique or of terroir. And the good producers are quite interested in and adept at making wines that showcase terroir over grape character. About soil and place? -
SLAKED | THURSDAY, APRIL 30, 2009 Bonny Doon Tasting at City Winery There is a lot of talk about "vins de terroir" and "minerality" and "sensitive crystallization" (although this last sounds like New Age crap to me) and I was quite excited. By contrast, I very much enjoyed the 2005 Syrah Le Pousseur **/ An elegant, restrained, but ripe and very purple wine, with a finish that made my teeth Zzzzzzzing! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 21, 2009 By the Glass - Burgundy Complaints Edition Malconsorts and Suchots are within a stone's throw of one another (if a major league ball player were throwing the stone), but they will always produce different wines - and that's a terroir issue. 2005 Lafouge Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Les Duresses , $27. 2005 Domaine des Croix Bourgogne , $25. 2005 René LeClerc Bourgogne , $25. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2009 Domaine de Bellivière - Keeping it Real in the Northern Loire They have been fully organic since 2005 and as of 2008 farm their entire estate biodynamically. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2008 Domaine Dujac Barrel Tasting Jeremy and most of the other wine makers we spoke with agreed that 2005 is a phenomenally ripe vintage that will age for a long time. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2008 5% of the Tip of the Terroir Iceberg also learned a lot about terroir in Burgundy. What did surprise me was how truly profound are the differences between the various terroir. What an incredible trip! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2008 Dressner Portfolio Tasting Notes The 2006's from Chidaine are quite good, although if you're used to the 2005's they will seem light. The 2006's are probably typical and the 2005's are probably extra rich and intense. My favorite was the 2006 Clos Habert , a demi-sec wine that I also love in 2005. The Italian wines - I didn't taste 'em. How thoughtful is that? -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2007 Silver Burgundy Roudup - WBW #39 Before getting into the specifics, here are a few things that jump out at me when looking at our notes as a whole: 9 out of the 14 reds tasted were from the 2005 vintage, a ripe and glorious year. Lyle Fass of Rockss and Fruit also participates for the first time, writing about a Tres Vieille Vignes 2005 Mâcon Bussieres by Eric Texier. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2007 The Beaujolais Challenge - Julienas How would this entry from 2005 perform in its youth? Duboeuf's Prestige wines are limited in quantity and are supposed to best represent their terroir. 2005 Michel Tete Julienas Cuvee Prestige , $24 (Chambers Street Wines). Julienas, with Saint Amour is the northern most Beaujolais Cru. What about 2003 in Beaujolais? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2007 WBW #36 - Naked Chardonnay 2005 Chablis and a 2005 from the Maconnais. You probably saw Eric Asimov's recent article describing a tasting of 2005 wines from the Maconnais. 2005 Litaud Macon-Vergisson Domaine des Vieille Pierres , $14 (Chambers Street Wines). 2005 Domaine Boudin Chablis , $19 (Chambers Street Wines). And why not participate? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JULY 2, 2007 The Beaujolais Challenge - Beaujolais Aside from the granite rich sandy soils that give the wines terroir , or their sense of place, the other thing that makes wine from Beaujolais special is carbonic maceration. 2005 Jean-Paul Brun Domaine des Terres Dorees Cuvee L'AncienVieille Vignes , $15 (Chambers Street Wines). First time checking out the Beaujolais Challenge? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 24, 2007 2004 Lafouge Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru Les Duresses The 2005 Lafouge wines are hitting retail now, or very soon, so it might be a good time to grab whatever is left of the 2004 bottles. The new wines might not be as inexpensive - you know, slap a "2005" on the bottle and everyone seems to go nuts. It is somewhat in between, and this is probably representative of Auxey-Duresses terroir. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2007 Nuits-Saint-Georges: Some Questions Many hundreds in better vintages (good luck saving up for the 2005's). Maybe Les Saint-Georges is exceptional terroir, but how could all of those southern vineyards produce better grapes than the vineyards adjacent to Vosne-Romanee? Speaking of the search for value in red Burgundy wines. Why is this? This just doesn't make sense to me. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, JANUARY 26, 2007 2004 Shea Pinot Noir Wadenswil Clone Not elegant, muscular, none of the animal or barnyard I like in Burgundy wines - this one has its own Willamette blue fruit terroir thing going on. So count me in for the 2005 wines when they are released, I guess. Shea was a common name when I first became interested in Oregon wine, but more as a vineyard on other producer's labels. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2007 Wine Blogging Wednesday #29 - Biodynamic Wine This might be because of differences in terroir (Montlouis is reputed to be sandier), or maybe because there are more producers in Vouvray who consistently make great wine. BrooklynLady and I visited Delatang in while in the Loire Valley in October of 2005 and we loved our tasting (there was a 1995 moelleux.YUM). cents. Next time. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2006 A Great Tasting at Moillard Grivot They recommend Moillard Grivot as a great place to taste wines from various villages and to compare, to learn something about the terroir. Our tasting notes: 2005 Moillard Grivot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes , E29. And you don't need an appointment. The house was literally the tip of the iceberg. Like an airplane hangar - HUGE. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2006 Weekend Wines and Eats II Made from vines of at least 30 years old, this is an expressive wine full of fresh fruit and the sensation of terroir. We opened the 2005 Dr. Stephan Reuter Findling Trocken Qualitatswein Riesling that our friends brought with the soup. We opened a bottle of 2005 Hermann J. Some darn good eatin' and drinkin' this weekend, yeah. | |
