Chablis Night We then enjoyed two wines from the 2005 vintage with my fish soup. 2005 is thought to be a great vintage because, as in most of France, conditions were essentially perfect. I'm not sure yet where I stand on 2005, as I've had some wines that are more about ripeness and grape character than they are about terroir. But close. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MAY 9, 2010 Brotherhood Dry Riesling 2008 This past week-end, my pal Mark and I were able to taste two Rieslings from the Brotherhood Winery located in Washingtonville (Hudson Valley) NY on the Shawangunk Wine Trail. The two wines we tasted were the 2008 Riesling and the 2008 'dry' Riesling. Doing so seemed almost impossible. Enough history. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 2010 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #4 - Inexpensive Provence Reds With that in mind, I convened the Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel to take a closer look at inexpensive Provence red wines. Such a great group for this tasting - Rosemary drinks loads of minerally white wine and has a tough time with big red wines like this. During the tasting and then dinner, this wine was good but also a bit weird. -
DR. VINO | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7, 2010 Why is there so little Biodynamic wine in Bordeaux? One of the 2009 wines that generated favorable comments at last week’s en primeur tastings in Bordeaux was Pontet-Canet in Pauillac. Over on Twitter, there was some confusion about the status of their Biodynamic certification. So I asked Alfred Tesseron who sent in a clarifying response that follows after the jump. Here are their. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MARCH 29, 2010 Lunar Cycles and Wine Showings But I kid you not, the calendar has been so reliable that I'm starting to plan dinners and tastings around it. But when was the last time you drank (not tasted) 7 bottles of wine in an evening and every one of them was showed beautifully? I'm starting to believe in the influence of lunar cycles on wine. And there have been exceptions. -

DR. VINO | TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2010 Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello But after tasting several dozen wines from vintages dating back to 1968, it’s clear to me that from vines grown on the fractured limestone, Ridge Monte Bello has been able to achieve this rare feat. group of ten tasters from the winery sits down to blind taste about five flights of six wines, which come from the individual vineyard plots. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Tidal Pool But the 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Grand Cru Le Clos, those bottles were an expensive mistake. In a very ripe vintage like 2005, the character of the vintage can easily overshadow the expression of terroir. When I think that I could have five bottles of this instead of two of the 2005 Fèvre's, I feel like a dunce. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Concha y Toro Marques de Casa Concha Carmenere 2007 It's been a few years since I tasted Carmenere. If I remember right, it was a take it or leave it, nothing special, too many other fine wines, don't shop for wine. My last review confirmed that feeling, but in a very serious attempt to expand a lazy palate I purchased a few different labels to compare. The first was disappointing. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3, 2010 An Evening with the People and the Wines of Mosel Wine Merchant There was a 2005 Lauer Kern with a mature and mellow nose that initially showed some peach and floral elements, but after 15 minutes in the glass, had morphed into liquid slate. These are good people doing good things, and their wines taste great and are reasonably priced. If you can make it to one of these tastings, you really should. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2010 Gambero Rosso Tasting: Italian Wines of 2010 Last night I only had about an hour to sample as many wines as I could at the Gambero Rosso Tasting Italian Wines of 2010, so I checked out the table listing and went directly to the ones that caught my eye.
