I went to the big Michael Skurnik / Terry Theise tasting last week, the only tasting in NYC where one can gaze upon Robert De Niro's father while sampling wine. Many of the non-vintage Champagnes are based on 2005 grapes, a very ripe year, as it was in most of the wine making world. Sorry, back to the Theise Champagne Tasting.

Another wine sampled at NY Tre Bicchieri event: Coming from Valtellina, in Lombardia, Italy and made from 100% Chiavennasca grapes which are left to dry for 3 months before vinification, this wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and then for 20 months in large Slavonian oak barrels.

Out of the five that I sampled three were from Tenuta San Felice in Chianti Classico, one was from Tenuta Campogiovanni in Montalcino and one from Tenuta Perolla inMaremma. Thierry Puzelat, along with his older brother Jean-Marie, is responsible for a big lineup of delicious wines from the Touraine and Cheverny appellations in the eastern part of the Loire Valley. You love good wine, right? It works.

Sampled this at In Vino Wine Bar. From Friuli, Italy comes the Schiopettino grape once thought to be lost to extinction from the Phylloxera epidemic of the 19th century. On the nose are waves of chocolate, oak, cherries, and dried fruits set against a palate of concentrated sour cherries with a balanced acidity and dry finish.

For about $50 you can sample almost every important wine that Long Island has to offer, meet and talk to the folks who make the wine, taste loads of interesting food, and mingle with the stars. Shinn's 2005 Estate Merlot is balanced and spicy, and just delicious. Okay, no stars, unless you count Lenn or the location itself, BAM. cents.

then moved onto the 2005 Hayne Vineyard Zin & '05 reserve Zin. finished with a barrel sample of their 2006 Cab which was bit tight but showed blue/black fruit and gripping tannins. tried the Volker Eisele 2005 Cab which was nice and somewhat subdued and finally the Showkett Vineyards 2005 Cab. Nice wines. Good stuff.

April 12 for the Twenty-third California Futures Tasting at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, featuring wines from 48 producers' 2006 vintage, plus a number of additional samples. Tasting notes for the best wines of the night: Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2005 2006 2007 (all $80). The 2005 was even more subdued than either the 2006 or 2007.

And finally the Peay 2005 "La Bruma" Estate Syrah, which I was told came from a very cool Syrah site, was also not a fruit bomb like some of the other Syrah's I tried. based on prices it was actually the cheapest of their 3 Pinots, the 2005 Etude "Temblor" Pinot Noir. Sadly, the prices for Peay wines are quite high. Great stuff.

2005 is one of the most fabled vintages in French history. An exceptional vintage like 2005 means that the quality of the wines from everyone is racheted up: normally good producers make very good wine; very good producers make exceptional wine, etc. 2005 Bordeaux in my experience has had a somewhat mixed showing thus far.

The wine is a 2005 Aglianico from Campania from the Intrepid Wine Company. We have the 2005 Intrepid Aglianico. The Barbera we have in our starter kit this month is a 2005 Barbera D'Asti from Icardi. The 2005 Barbera D'Asti Tabarin from Icardi is crowd pleaser. Aglianico was the wine that made this wine geek a wine geek.

Among the various goodies we sampled that evening was a confit of duck leg. Mostly Carignan, with some Grenache and Syrah thrown in, the 2005 Domaine des 2 Anes Corbieres Fontanilles was smooth and supple, ripe and complex. Turned out to be a real winner. Okay, but I loved this wine, the 2006 Cantina Santa Maddalena St. It is all tank.

In 2001 the answer came from a vine sample taken from one of a group of towns in the Dalmatian-Split County called Kastela where seven towns make up the population with each town name starting with the word Kastel. So come on in and try the Benson Ferry 2005 Old Vine Zinfandel and enjoy the history while enjoying the wine. Charles M.

honestly do not remember how I knew to visit Adelsheim when BrooklynLady and I toured Willamette wine country in the unusually sunny and warm first week of January, 2005. In fact, it was an Adelsheim wine that recently won Eric Asimov's NY Times Tasting panel sampling of Oregon Pinot Gris. Yup, basically 2 years ago on the button.

Of the Pinots I've sampled, Corral Creek is the wine I've enjoyed best from their lineup, as I always find it to have nice balance and fresh red fruit. read that the 2005 Chehalem wines have alcohol levels in the 13s. Chehalem makes three single vineyard Pinot Noirs, a Reserve wine, and several blends. Yup, I think of it in that order.

BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time in October of 2005. know I'm supposed to wait, but in 2007 I sampled two of the wines and one of them was pretty mind blowing, the other just plain old excellent. Before getting into the specifics, here are a few things that jump out at me when looking at our notes as a whole: 9 out of the 14 reds tasted were from the 2005 vintage, a ripe and glorious year. Could be our small sample, but this reiterated for me that France continues to make some of the finest under $15 wine in the world. preferred the wine that took second place, the 2005 Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roi (about $23, available everywhere). That's a fun thing to do on a summer evening though, so no complaints.

Also, the vignerons poured not only their entry level wines, but their top wines, and this provided the opportunity to taste a $62 Cote Rotie without actually buying it, which is much appreciated if you are in my tax bracket and you want to sample the wares before investing. 2005 Marechal Pommard La Chaniere , $50 - who would have thunk it?

There are also special American Pinot tastings, such as "Oregon 2005 Vintage Horizontal." These cost about $100 clams, but they offer an amazing opportunity to sample "at least 16 wines" from a specific locale. What kind of person is it, I ask, who would not go to this Oregon 2005 Horzontal? Aimez-vous Pinot Noir?

have been sampling some older experiments using this strategy, a few 2001 Pinots from Oregon and Burgundy, 2002 was considered the star vintage in both regions. 2005 is supposed to be an incredible vintage, and from the little I have tasted so far, it's not hype - the wines are amazing. So beautiful.

BrooklynLady and I visited Delatang in while in the Loire Valley in October of 2005 and we loved our tasting (there was a 1995 moelleux.YUM). For WBW I decided to taste a 2005 wine, the vintage that everyone is so excited about all over France, and the Loire is certainly no exception. cents. Now.biodynamic wine. Next time.

Dessert wine is costly in general, yes, but when sampling a new type of wine there are usually lower priced versions to begin with, for example, there are $12 half bottles of Sauternes or Barsac that allow the taster to decide whether or not to continue trying that type of wine.
