BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2011 Learning Enough to Know That I Don't Know Anything. looked at what I have and decided on the 2005 Domaine des Croix Bourgogne , $25, Becky Wasserman Selections. perhaps he got excited about the 2005 fruit and threw everything he had at it. Wine can have a savory taste, I've experienced it countless times. It is not specific to a grape variety, I find, more to certain places and techniques of wine making. Ribonucleotides? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MARCH 18, 2011 An Afternoon of Grand Cru Chablis This is a vintage of ripe fruit, one that appeals in the same way that 2005 appeals - the wines are delicious and perhaps will last a very long time. The other day I had the opportunity to taste wines representing all 7 of the Grand Cru climats of Chablis, something that I had never before done in one sitting. were brothers. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2011 Comparing the 2008 and 2009 Vintages in Burgundy via Domaine Fourrier If you are categorizing, I think that 2009 is a vintage that can be grouped with 2005 - growers achieved high levels of ripeness and did so without having to sort out a lot of grapes. Not as perfect as 2005, but this is a vintage of big wines that should age well. This one will definitely have a place in my cellar. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2010 Mid-term Cellaring Results 2005 Paul Pernot Beaune Clos du Dessus des Marconnets , $23, Fruit of the Vines Imports. The palate is a disaster - way too evolved, no definition, not flawed, but unpleasant. The results have not been terribly impressive so far. Kind of like reading an old journal entry. There is also a pungency to the palate that is truly compelling.

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2010 Osso Bucco Since I have no Italian white wine in the house, I opened a 2005 Domaine du Closel Savennières Clos du Papillon, $33, Louis/Dressner Selections, which worried me with its alcohol and bulk two years ago, and has not improved, I'm sorry to say. Don't even be a little bit scared, because you should definitely make this dish. -

WHY WINE BLOG | THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 Silver Birch Sauvignon Blanc 2009 3L Definitely a good party wine. Last March I posted a press release on a new collection of artisan wines in an innovative attractive new package. An international wine collection with six brands and ten items packaged in a new exciting premium 3L wine cask from the Octavin Home Wine Bar ™. The Chardonnay was not impressive. -
Chablis Night Very tight aromatically, but there are hints of chalky rock and citrus fruit, and there is a definite oxidative character to the fruit. We then enjoyed two wines from the 2005 vintage with my fish soup. 2005 is thought to be a great vintage because, as in most of France, conditions were essentially perfect. But close. -
DR. VINO | MONDAY, APRIL 5, 2010 Bordeaux 2009 en primeur — the dispatches! Before the grapes were even harvested, some commentators and industry participants had hailed this vintage as superb, everyone making parallels to 2005 and some even invoking the storied 1947. BigSiTheWineGuy Definite mixed bag vintage. BigSiTheWineGuy Definite mixed bag vintage. So how did things pan out in the glass? Overall. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, MARCH 16, 2010 Concha y Toro Casillero del Diablo Carmenere 2008 The Marques de Concha Casa, at $20, was definitely the best of the three, although the Casillero del Diablo was a great buy. This is the third of the Carmenere wines I tasted this month. As I stated in my previous two articles, Carmenere is one of the wines I've pushed aside in the past, but have placed on a list to re-examine in 2010. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 7, 2010 Tidal Pool But the 2005 Domaine William Fèvre Grand Cru Le Clos, those bottles were an expensive mistake. In a very ripe vintage like 2005, the character of the vintage can easily overshadow the expression of terroir. When I think that I could have five bottles of this instead of two of the 2005 Fèvre's, I feel like a dunce. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2010 New West Village Wine Bar: Pudding Stones Behind the bar one of the owners, Joe Rabasco recommends the Costa Del Sol Napa 2005 blend of Sangiovese, Zinfandel and Merlot produced by Bennesere Vineyards. I'll definitely be back Every morning I’ve been passing by a storefront in New York’s West Village that for months had its windows papered to block a view to the inside. -
WHY WINE BLOG | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2010 Why Wine: Cline Cellars: Giving Back with Cashmere 2008 Definitly not Beaujolais, but fruit forward with much higher alcohol. One of the great things about social networking is that you often get in contact with friends and classmates from a time when all was great, life was fun and we were all going to live forever. am fortunate to know a few survivors, including one male, now retired, co-worker. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2009 Just Open It would love to give you detailed tasting notes, but we attacked the Prévost and Selosse before drinking this, and that's definitely the wrong order for these wines. 2005) Cédric BouchardLes Ursules Brut Blanc de Noirs , $80, Polaner Selections. party of 15 people? ALICE FEIRING | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2009 The Go Ask Alice Project Q:5 (wines for vegans) Bosquet des Papes 2007 Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition $40.99 **Bosquet des Papes 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Tradition $33.99 Definitely needs food, and maybe #5- So my husband and I are vegans and we eat a lot of vegetable stews - with potatoes or butternut squash - can you recommend a red to go with that? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2009 More from the Dressner Tasting It will be more expensive than the 2005 was, about $23, and I will happily buy it. It smells of dried roses and is bright and elegant on the palate, with a definite chalky feel. More thoughts and notes from the recent Dressner Portfolio Tasting: The 2007 Domaine de la Pépière Granite de Clisson is here. Lower yields perhaps? want it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2009 Tales from the Dressner Portfolio Tasting loved the 2005, not as much the 2006, never saw the 2007, and now we have the 2008. In other Saumur-Champigny news, the 2005 Clos Rougeard wines were very impressive. The 2005 Le Clos was wide open and ready to go, crystal clear and with beautiful fruit. People came from all over the world to participate. Le Bourg was not shown. -
WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, OCTOBER 26, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Fox Run Vineyards Reserve Riesling 2008 I'll be back to Fox Run for the annual Deck the Halls event and will definitely bring home some more. Sometime near the end of the year, I would like to post all that I have learned and the wines that I have come to enjoy over the past two years. Tonight, Shirley baked trout with Cajun spices, cole slaw, corn and Cajun fries. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2009 Tasting the Wines of Jaques Lassaigne Lassaigne is not what I would call cult Champagne, like Selosse, but this is definitely Champagne for the Champagne lover. blend of grapes from 8 parcels, this version is 72% 2006, the rest 2005. This version is based almost entirely on 2005, and comes from old vines from three different vineyards. Excellent wine. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2009 Blind tasting is tough – tasting Bordeaux 2005 with Robert Parker On Wednesday evening I attended a tasting of fifteen wines from Bordeaux 2005. In his opening remarks, Parker placed the 2005 vintage in the pantheon of vintages that includes 45, 47, 59, 61, and 82. Parker opined after the flight that it was very definitely a Medoc and probably a first growth. Parker called it “shut down.” -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2009 Wine of the Week - 2008 Clos des Briords am definitely one of those people. remember loving the 2005 almost immediately upon release because it was so open and expressive. I heard a story that I liked recently about Frédéric Mugnier , who makes some of the finest red wine in the world: he was asked what he drinks when he drinks white wine. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Michael Shaps Viognier 2006 found the wine at Total Wine & More in Virginia Beach for $23, so I can't call it a great buy, but it is definitely a good buy and will look for more Michael Shaps wine on my next trip to Virginia. While in Virginia on vacation, I picked up four bottles of Virginia wines, figuring I would try all four and choose one to review. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Fox Run Gewurztraminer 2007 Definitely going to be a white wine, but I had at least five to chose from. One of the problems with bringing home lots of wine from a Finger Lakes wine tour is deciding which ones to try first. Shirley helps make that decision easier by planning some meals ahead of time or by just giving me a warning of what's on the menu for the night. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Anthony Road Semi-dry Riesling 2008 Oh most definitely! OK, today I sinned again, at least according to some. took my list of New York medal winners to another local wine shop. Unfortunately, I found only one, besides another Anthony Road Vinyards 2008 semi-dry Riesling which I already have in the cooler. Winner of the New York Wine and Food Classics's 'Governor's Cup.' -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26, 2009 Brooklyn Blind Tasting Panel #1 - Cour-Cheverny Not warm and easy ripening like 2005, not as bad as 2001, typical perhaps, classic. Cazin is definitely the leading producer in the appellation with many years of great wines under his belt. It's not bad wine, but in this company it was definitely not distinguished. Is there room for another blind tasting panel? Just mute. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, AUGUST 16, 2009 By the Glass - Poulsard Edition love Burgundy and Beaujolais, and Poulsard is definitely of the same phenotype. 2005 Jacques Puffeney Poulsard Arbois "M" , $26, Neal Rosenthal Selections. I've recently emerged from a bit of a "red wine stand-still." I've wanted to branch out some more. Why did it take me so long to find Poulsard? Is that so wrong? -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, AUGUST 9, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Henry Estate Oregon Pinot Noir 2006 Don't think I would have with any fish, but definitely a nice wine for lamb or a nice pork roast or even a good angus beef hamburger. Sometimes you just get lucky when searching out a wine. dropped into a local shop this week and during a conversation with the shop owner I had asked if he had any wines from Oregon. He did. Pricey, but good. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SUNDAY, JUNE 28, 2009 A Day in the Finger Lakes put this stop first because it is definitely my favorite New York winery. It was also a 2005, which I learned on this tour was a long summer and a fantastic year for the Finger Lakes reds. I am just sitting back enjoying one of the many New York Finger Lakes wines I brought home from last weeks tour. The first was a must do. -
SLAKED | TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2009 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel Mini-Review Rafanelli , whose 2005 Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel ** at 14.8% I'm not bringing this home to mommy anytime soon, but trust me, this is definitely worth a looksee. WHY WINE BLOG | MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 Definitely cherry, what kind of cherry beats me and a little spicy note of cedar and hint of vanilla and a bunch of plum. Bonterra Cabernet Sauvignon is a definite buy again wine and at only $16 Take it from an amateur wine lover. I have a daughter that is living at home right now while she fixes up a house she bought a few months ago. -
DR. VINO | THURSDAY, JUNE 4, 2009 Australian Riesling - Can it age? - Grosset, Steingarten and Leo Buring The 2005, by contrast, was in a very nice spot, exhibiting more muted lime and floral character. The 1998 was oddly phenolic and, while quite solid, not as rewarding today as the 2005. The 1980 Pewsey Vale Rhine Riesling Eden, golden in color, was interesting but definitely in the “drink now part of its bottle evolution. -
WHY WINE BLOG | SATURDAY, MAY 30, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 Definitely a wine I am going to stock up on. I am just going to begin by saying the Clos Du Bois Calcaire 2006 is probably the best Chardonnay I have ever had. Last evening my wife and I had dinner at one of the finest restaurants in Central New York, The Mohegan Manor in Baldwinsville. Made me feel good, I don't win that often. -
WHY WINE BLOG | TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2009 Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Damiani Pinot Noir 2006 This was definitely not one of them. Although I do mostly white wine in the summer (some reds), this will definitely be on my list for the cool evenings on the patio or when friends come over to just chill out. A few weeks ago, I reviewed a Fingerlakes red table wine from Damiani Wine Cellars of Hector, NY. Here's what I mean by that. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 29, 2009 Brooklynguy's $20 and Under Case 2005 Domaine Rimbert Mas au Schiste , $20, Jenny & François Selections. Great definition and clarity for a full bodied wine from the Roussillan, with a lovely perfume of ripe fruit and lots of interesting mineral and soil tones. Call me crazy, but I don't see us climbing out of this recession any time soon. Syrah, and Grenache. -
DR. VINO | FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 2009 Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas port - a vertical, 1958 - 2005 Well, in the case of Taylor’s, it’s the Quinta de Vargellas: this single vineyard wine’s most recent edition, the 2005, is about $45 compared with the current vintage port, the 2003, which is still north of $100. It’s definitely a fifty year wine–is this going to be like the 67 of this old vine trio? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2009 By the Glass - Piedmont Edition 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba , about $30. This will definitely appeal right now to folks who like a richer and more concentrated style. My friend David McDuff is hosting the 54th edition of Wine Blogging Wednesday, the monthly online tasting event created by my pal and New York Wine blogger extraordinaire, Lenn Thompson. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2009 A Harmonious Valentine's Dinner Although the feeling in the air is definitely one of restraint, BrooklynLady and I managed to enjoy quite a feast together on Valentine's day. The 2005 Lignier-Michelot Bourgogne, $23, Becky Wasserman Selections, is a wine I've enjoyed several times over the past couple years, and this was easily the finest bottle yet. wish I had more. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2009 Domaine de Bellivière - Keeping it Real in the Northern Loire They have been fully organic since 2005 and as of 2008 farm their entire estate biodynamically. Even in a hot and ripe vintage like 2005 when the wines were richer and sweeter than usual, these trademark aromas were still evident amidst all of the fruit. If you're interested in Loire whites, all of these are definitely worth trying. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21, 2008 Domaine Dujac Barrel Tasting think I basically maintained my dignity, but I definitely was emitting the "I covet" vibe. Jeremy and most of the other wine makers we spoke with agreed that 2005 is a phenomenally ripe vintage that will age for a long time. Such ripeness and structure as in 2005 doesn't always lead to a balanced and graceful drink after 15 years. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2008 Good Beef, Villages Wine, and Buying Strategy Lunch was definitely in order, and so we went to La Toute Petite Auberge in Vosne-Romanée where I ate a wonderful entrecôte of Charolais beef. If you feel the need to snub my 3 bottles of $28 2005 Lafouge Auxey-Duresses1er Cru La Chapelle, so be it My TGV high speed train arrived in Dijon at noon. Uh-uh, no way. And it was. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2008 By the Glass - 2005 Muscadet Edition 2005 was the vintage of the century in Bordeaux, the vintage of the millennium in Burgundy, the finest post-World War II vintage in the Rhône, and the greatest vintage in recent memory in the Loire. Isn't it tempting to check in on your 2005's? know you love Muscadet - what's your take on the 2005 vintage? Drank in mid August. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2008 Day Before Thanksgiving Tidbits Here are two reds that I want to wholeheartedly and most definitely recommend to you. I'll be pouring 2005 Boxler Sylvaner and 2007 Clos Roche Blanche Touraine Gamay at my Thanksgiving dinner this year. All good bloggers are supposed to tell you about the wines they will open for Thanksgiving. It, oddly, was also corked. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2008 Thoughts on a Northern Rhône Tasting Here are some of the big shots that just didn't do it for me: 2004 Chapoutier Hermitage Blanc Chante-Alouette ($90) 2005 Chapoutier Hermitage Monier de la Sizeranne ($115) 2005 Delas Fr è res Hermitage Les Bessards and Marquise de la Tourette ($?) I recently participated in the Wine & Spirits Northern Rhône tasting panel. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2008 Dressner Portfolio Tasting Notes These are piercing wines of great definition, and they can seem like turtles, just their head visible underneath all of that shell. The 2006's from Chidaine are quite good, although if you're used to the 2005's they will seem light. The 2006's are probably typical and the 2005's are probably extra rich and intense. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2008 Tidbits Wine Tasting News I had the 2005 Domaine de la Pépière Muscadet Clos des Briords the other night, and it was awesome. had the 2005 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux the other night and it was honestly just amazing. This is a definite buy 4-bottles and drink over the next 18 months wine. Why yes, yes he would. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles Next year's version of this wine, Cuvée 733, will be all about the 2005 grapes, and depending on the character of the wines made from those grapes, it could be a very different wine. liked this wine very much, but it is definitely not the same wine I tasted at Wine & Spirits. NV Jacquesson Brut Cuvée 732 , $42, Winebow. grams. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 By the Glass - Purity Edition get it when I can sense how clean the fruit is, when I can feel the clarity and definition of its aromas. 2005 Domaine Weinbach Sylvaner Clos des Capuchins R é serve , price unknown but about $20, Vineyard Brands Imports. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2008 I Learned that I Know Nothing About Wine 2005 Puzelat Touraine La Tesni è re , a lovely smoky and funky white made of Menu Pineau, and the 2004 Puzelat Touraine La Tesni è re , a red made of Pineau D'Aunis. love these wines, but let me tell you - they definitely got a mixed reception from this crowd. The more I learn about wine, the more I realize that I don't know. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | THURSDAY, JULY 3, 2008 Alias With Some Eyrie The wine for this adventure was a 2005 Dundee Hills Estate Grown Pinot Gris from Eyrie Vineyards in Oregon. France. This is 100% Shiraz from Chamarré. but produced with half of the grapes from the Northern Rhone (for the spicy kick and fresh acidity) and half from Languedoc (for the jammy, ripe fruitiness). -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JUNE 8, 2008 2006 Beaujolais - Dressner's Tasting 2005 Michel Tête Juli é nas Cuv é e Prestige , $28. This definitely belongs on the same team as the other Beaujolais tasted above Last month I wrote a little bit about my experiences with 2006 Beaujolais. I'm serious - everything was really good. Beaujolais in the right hands is such a pleasure. It might take too long to open up. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008 By the Glass - 2006 Beaujolais Edition What I'm about to say might make some of you angry, although that is definitely not my aim. actually prefer this wine to the 2005. I'm a big fan of the 2006 vintage in Beaujolais. What I love about the '06s so far, aside from their sheer deliciousness, is their transparency - they are so clearly and unmistakably Beaujolais. -
WINE TASTING GUY | SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2008 Day in Napa then moved onto the 2005 Hayne Vineyard Zin & '05 reserve Zin. Definitely a great food wine. tried the Volker Eisele 2005 Cab which was nice and somewhat subdued and finally the Showkett Vineyards 2005 Cab. WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 Polaner tasting standouts wine I will definitely keep an eye out for in the future. wine I really loved and found quite unique was the 2005 Domaine de Roally Vire'-Clesse' from the Macconnais, France. tasted 4 of them; a 2005 from grapes with botrytis (a desirable mold that when properly managed leads to long lived sweet wines), and 3 Vouvray. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2008 Polaner Spring Portfolio Tasting, 2008 definitely have not spent enough time at home with dinner and M. The 2005 Domaine de Roally Viré Clessé has an intoxicating nose that screams "pure Chardonnay!" And the 2005 Granite de Clisson is still the same deliciously fascinating mineral fortress that it was when I tasted it a few months ago. Pinon's wines. Not with M. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2008 Jenny & Francois Follow Up Nicely perfumed, very fruity and floral, good acidity, very lively, and definitely had the muscle to stand up to the steak. 2005 Clos Siguier Cahors , $12. 2005 Blandine Chauchat Coteaux de Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup Les Tonilli è res , $17. 2005 Comptoirs de Magdala Côtes de Provence Escapade , $16. -

WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2008 Skurnik Tasting - my favorites (finally) And finally the Peay 2005 "La Bruma" Estate Syrah, which I was told came from a very cool Syrah site, was also not a fruit bomb like some of the other Syrah's I tried. Definitely one I'll be on the lookout for! based on prices it was actually the cheapest of their 3 Pinots, the 2005 Etude "Temblor" Pinot Noir. Great stuff. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 2008 Tasting Other Blogger's Recommendations After all, $25 buys less than half a bottle of most 2005 village wines from Puligny or Meursault. 2005 André Bonhomme Viré-Clessé , $25, Fleet Street Imports. First thing I noticed was the unusual color - this wine had a distinct peach hue, very faint, but definitely there amidst the golden yellow. Very pure and fresh. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MARCH 3, 2008 Three Loire 05's for the Cellar I've been checking in on my 2005 Loire wines lately, just to see how things are going. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2008 My Bordeaux One Night Stand And yes, I am definitely capable of being that cheesy. We drank a 2004, a vintage that might not need as much time to unwind as say, 2000, 2003, or 2005. I know it's a touchy time to talk about Bordeaux , but I'm going for it anyway. I'm not trying to stoke the fires of the debate. Do you do that? Don't lie, you know you do. Anyway. We -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2008 By the Glass - Wines that I Don't Like Edition But I just don't consider myself expert enough to sit here and tell you definitively that a wine is bad. And it goes great with lighter far like antipasti or can definitely be drunk alone. The next wine I want to talk about is really cool. This region has got a lot going on. guess makes the region the most visited. That's a lot to take in. concur. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 30, 2008 Casa Marguery Malbec: Bringing the Past to the Present and Into the Future What is definite though is that in the late 1800's and early 1900's Argentina saw a huge influx of European immigrants settle on their land bringing with them all kinds of vitis vinifera rootstocks, from Barbera to Chardonnay and from Syrah to Cot or Malbec. Before Cot made its way to South America Argentina was definitely making wine. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JANUARY 28, 2008 By the Glass - Restaurant and Wine Bar Edition Mostly Carignan, with some Grenache and Syrah thrown in, the 2005 Domaine des 2 Anes Corbieres Fontanilles was smooth and supple, ripe and complex. Quite a lovely thing that they're doing, definitely worth poking around their site. Among the various goodies we sampled that evening was a confit of duck leg. They're all like that. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2008 DRINKING A 2005 BENSON FERRY OLD VINE ZINFANDEL WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND In 1998 Meredith and company realized that Plavac Mali was definitely not Zin but relatives with one of them being the parent. The Zin I want to talk about today is the 2005 Benson Ferry Old Vine Zinfandel from the Lodi AVA (American Viticultural Area) in Lodi California. You either love it or you hate it. in most wine). Charles M. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2008 Clos Rougeard.if I Ever Go Back BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time in October of 2005. If you spend $55 on a Burgundy, are you definitely getting the finest example? We went to the Loire Valley and our plan was to see the various villages, and Tours, of course, but also to feast on the wonderful food and wines of the region. Bordeaux? -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2008 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN MAY I PRESENT TO YOU THE ALPHABET CITY WINE CO. WINE STARTER KIT. Inquire within or by phone: (212) 505-WINE The wine we are offering is a 2005 cabernet sauvignon from Quinta de Viluco from the Maipo Valley named after the river that runs through the Andes Mountains to the Pacific. This wine was definitely grown in a valley. The wine is a 2005 and has a really nice subtle spiciness on the nose with a waft of deep cherry fruit. Cheers -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2007 By the Glass - Just After X-Mas Edition But without the definition and focus that I have come to expect from my favorite Champagnes. Not sure that it was so much better than, say the 2005 Macon-Charnay Vieille Vignes by Manciat, and that is literally one quarter of the price, but whatever. I'm in San Diego now at the in-law's place. She was wonderful, actually. That's my.02 -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2007 Some $15 Beauties from the Loire Valley The first is another great winter white, the 2005 Domaine du Vieux Pressoir Saumur Blanc Elegance , ($13 Sip Fine Wines). like her definition of wine of the year - much more compelling than top 100 lists and things like that. Why, drink wine, of course. This is a producer whose wines I might need to explore a bit further. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2007 Silver Burgundy Roudup - WBW #39 Before getting into the specifics, here are a few things that jump out at me when looking at our notes as a whole: 9 out of the 14 reds tasted were from the 2005 vintage, a ripe and glorious year. Lyle Fass of Rockss and Fruit also participates for the first time, writing about a Tres Vieille Vignes 2005 Mâcon Bussieres by Eric Texier. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2007 By the Glass 2005 Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuffeaux (about $23, Dressner stuff again, might be sold out at this point but there are other Chidaine wines on the shelf - try one). If you come across this it's definitely worth a try. I used to call this kind of post "Recent Sips," but I think I like this better. But I really like it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2007 Sauvignon Blanc - a Mini Blind Tasting preferred the wine that took second place, the 2005 Lucien Crochet Sancerre La Croix du Roi (about $23, available everywhere). It lacked the focus and definition that I found in the Loire wines, but it was very good, and I think a good value. That's a fun thing to do on a summer evening though, so no complaints. Another time. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2007 WBW # 39 Announced - Silver Burgundy And Beaujolais.well Beaujolais definitely deserves its own WBW, and it's been getting some blogging attention lately already. Here are two more places to read more about the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais: Eric Asimov's tasting panel recently tasted a load of 2005 Mâconnais whites. What do you think of when you hear "Burgundy?" -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2007 Red Burgundy from the Martin Scott Portfolio One thing I want to say right here and right now is that I think you can spend between $30-$60 per bottle and get a case of stupendous 2005 red Burgundy. That 2005 Simon Bize was really beautiful. wonder how the other 2005 Bize wines are.anyone taste them yet? How do I know this? And that one was from me when I re-read the post. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2007 The Beaujolais Challenge - Chenas and Saint-Amour but the 2006 Saint-Amour was a bit more expensive than the 2005 Chenas. The Chenas was, to my tastes, a below-average example of a 2005 Cru Beaujolais, nothing to seek out again, and the Saint-Amour was memorable, and a definite re-buy. 2005 Trichard Chenas , $16 (Moore Brothers). Been a while, huh? Me neither, really. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 WBW 37 - Indigenous Grape Varieties 2005 Domaine du Closel Savennieres La Jalousie , $20 (Chambers Street Wines). Aromas of yellow apples and flowers, quinine (like in tonic water), and honey, with definite minerality. 2005 D omaine du Closel Savennieres Clos du Papillon , $33 (Chambers Street Wines). That rules out a lot of wine. Whatever, do what you want. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, AUGUST 16, 2007 Southwest France Revisited Definitely not trying to steal Joe's thunder here, not that I could anyway. like their vibrant citrus and exotic fruit flavors, their food friendliness, their light texture - perfect for summer, and I definitely like their price point at about $10. The 2005 is all gone I'm sure but the 2006 is starting to appear. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2007 WBW #36 - Naked Chardonnay Heck, they've been making incredible Chardonnay in Puligny, Chassagne, and Meursault for over 100 years and they're definitely using new oak. 2005 Chablis and a 2005 from the Maconnais. You probably saw Eric Asimov's recent article describing a tasting of 2005 wines from the Maconnais. And why not participate? Many more. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, JULY 29, 2007 The Beaujolais Challenge - Cote-de-Brouilly Yes, it would definitely be interesting to lineup a few examples of wine from each of the Crus and taste them side by side in order to learn about their individual terroir.but why go through the effort? 2005 Domaine de la Voute des Crozes (Nicole Chanrion) Cote-de-Brouilly , $18 (Chambers Street Wines). And they probably are. -
ALICE FEIRING | SATURDAY, JULY 21, 2007 Alice Feiring - In Vino Veritas Even the crowd--definitely not neighborhood-- was very Hampton-esque, rams horn pendants dripping into WonderBra super-tanned cleavage. The cult Domaines Ott gets two placements, youll have to dig for one hundred clams to puchase a bottle of the 2005 Chateau des Selles, the "Les Dominieres" a mere $52. Delicious. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JUNE 18, 2007 An Old Rioja wanted to open a 2005 Burgundy with the mushroom lasagna, made with béchamel, somehow rich and light at the same time. Shouldn't 2005 be even better? But based on this bottle, I will definitely be back. The other night I was drowning and who came to the rescue? Deetrane, that's who. He's sort of like a wine superhero. Anyway. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JUNE 4, 2007 12 Year Old Rose? YES!!! 2005 R. fascinating wine and a definite rebuy You know how every so often you read something on a wine blog that captures your imagination, something about a wine you have never before tasted, something that sounds completely different and exciting? That doesn't happen too often for me, but when it does I am very happy. But a rose? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2007 Brooklyn Uncorked: A Tasting of Long Island Wines My "4"s: 2005 Lieb Pinot Blanc , $19. 2005 Waters Crest Private Reserve Chardonnay , $25. 2005 Channing Daughters Enfant Sauvage Chardonnay , $35. 2005 Waters Crest Nightwatch , $45 (375ml). definitely liked this wine, but at $45 for a half, it's just too easy to do better in the dessert wine world. alcohol. Yummy. -
Roundup - Recent Sips and Bites 2005 Paul Pernot Beaune Clos du Dessus des Marconnets , $22. 2005 Desvignes Morgon Javernieres , $21. It was every bit as good this time, but it definitely needed some air time to get there. 2005 Jean Manciat Macon Charnay Franclieu , $17. Acidity definitely lacking, and the wine wasn't balanced because of it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 23, 2007 Flatbush Farm These are definitely good things. LOVED the 2005, and I'm still experimenting, but I think I'm a big fan in general of Roches Neuves. Not as plush and extracted as the 2005, but dark and aromatic, fruity and herbal, excellent with food. BrooklynLady and I have never been big on the restaurant scene. Vegetarian? That's right. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MARCH 27, 2007 Notes From the Dressner Real Wine Attack Tasting 2005 Eric Texier Vins de Pays O Pale , $16 - This is a sweet wine made entirely from Viognier grapes. 2005 Marechal Pommard La Chaniere , $50 - who would have thunk it? 2005 Desvignes Morgon Javernieres , $21 - Cru Beaujolais from Desvignes, always good. Definitely a $15 beauty. hauled my butt into Manhattan (!) -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2007 Adventures in Wine Buying. The Final Chapter JS Score: 93, Oct 2005, Release Price: $78 Piero Busso Barbaresco Borgese 1999 x 3 WS: Refined red. Best after 2005. More to my palate, but could definitely mellow for a few more years. And we return to Deetrane's dark tale of intrigue, wading through the swamp of the secondary market. Will Deetrane get to keep the wine? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, MARCH 20, 2007 Gruner Veltliner Blind Tasting So, what happens when you put seven people in a Brooklyn apartment full of 2005 Gruner Veltliner? 2005 Hiedler Gruner Veltliner Maximum , $40 (prices at Prospect Wine Shop. 2005 Hirsch Gruner Veltliner Lamm , $33. 2005 Nigl Gruner Veltliner Kremser Freiheit , $17. 2005 Schloss Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner Renner , $28. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31, 2007 Two Great Tastings Coming Soon The event is called Chateauneuf du Pape 2005 - A Preview Tasting, and it's hosted by Tribeca Grill , the trendy eatery owned in part by Robert De Niro. I've enjoyed these tremendously in the past , and my pal Deetrane and I will definitely be among those elbowing you out of the way near the mature Burgundies. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2007 Wine Blogging Wednesday #29 - Biodynamic Wine absolutely am a Rudolph Steiner fan, and I definitely think of soil and its components as a vital living being that can experience varying degrees of health. BrooklynLady and I visited Delatang in while in the Loire Valley in October of 2005 and we loved our tasting (there was a 1995 moelleux.YUM). cents. Now.biodynamic wine. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2006 Wine Blogging Wednesday # 28 - Sparklers! Here are some tasting notes: 2005 Bruno Verdi Sangue di Giuda, $13. After a half hour open and further swirling and sipping, we summarized that although this wine is quite enjoyable and definitely scores points for its novelty, it essentially tastes like adult soda-pop. Why Judah, the traitor? Sounds promising. Yummy, right? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2006 Tasting at Domaine Paul Pernot The 2005 Puligny-Montrachet1er Cru les Folatieres retails for about $40, and its really good! Here are a few notes: Whites: 2005 Bourgogne. More elegant than the other 2005 Bourgogne whites that I tasted. 2005 Puligny-Montrachet. 2005 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru les Folatieres. Just a bit jumbled. | |
