DR. VINO | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2011 Erwan Faiveley at the helm It’s no secret in Burgundy and beyond that Faiveley has been on a roll. And in 2005 when Erwan was 25, his father continued the tradition and put Erwan in charge (Erwan himself has no children, so his position is likely safe for 25+ years). So when Erwan took over in 2005, he was careful not to rock the boat. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 My First 2006 Red Burgundies. They're calling 2006 a "classic" vintage in Burgundy, which means that it was a normal year. Meadows in Burghound Issue #29 says, among other things, about the 2006's: "At their best, the ‘06s are indeed classic Burgundies that are exceptionally aromatic and elegant with the best transparency to the underlying terroir since the 2001's." -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2008 A Few Mature Wines Just like in Burgundy - they say you should drink your 2001's and 2004's while waiting for your 2002s to mature. might compare 2001 in Oregon to 2001 in Burgundy. It certainly went well with steak, but it was not memorable, didn't inspire me to buy the 2005 version ($35) and lay it down. Not that they're sub-par, they are not. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, APRIL 17, 2008 More Dressner / Polaner Highlights - Reds Domaine Filliatreau, Saumur-Champigny - the 2005 Saumur-Champigny Grande-Vignolle was one of my favorite Loire Valley everyday reds, when it was around. But the superstar in the portfolio on this day was the 2005 Saumur-Champigny Vieille Vignes. I'll have to tell you about the red Burgundies next week Very long and intense. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2008 Il Nero Di Casanova Della Spinetta 2005 IGT Italy • This 95% Sangiovese with 5% Colorino from Terricola, Tuscany is a medium to full bodied, deep burgundy color, has cherries on the nose and fruity bubble gum, palate is luscious apple cherry on back of tongue -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2008 An Interview with Keith Beavers Put me at a table with this dish and a bottle of Pont de Crillon 2005 Pont de Crillon Les Chais de Pont de Crillon Cote Du Rhone and I am a happy wine geek. and bring a bottle of 1996 Grand Cru Burgundy. The following is an interview with Keith Beavers, co-owner of In Vino Wine Bar & Restaurant and Alphabet City Wine Co. Lamb, Baby! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2008 Wine Splurge Update stuck with Burgundy and grower Champagne. Back in January I lamented my past wine splurge results. Many of you commented with excellent suggestions, some of which I wound up using for Splurge 2007. Yeah, just like the NY State legislature, my budget comes out later than it's supposed to. More like $550. C'mon folks, I didn't buy that wine. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2008 By The Glass - Oregon Pinot Edition In the past month or so I've tasted a few 2005's, some old familiar faces and some from producers that are pretty much new to me. They're calling 2005 a "classic" vintage in Oregon. If you haven't tried Oregon wine because you're a Burgundy lover, you might try something from 2005. It's kind of a one-hit-wonder. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2008 Skurnik Tasting - my favorites (finally) And finally the Peay 2005 "La Bruma" Estate Syrah, which I was told came from a very cool Syrah site, was also not a fruit bomb like some of the other Syrah's I tried. based on prices it was actually the cheapest of their 3 Pinots, the 2005 Etude "Temblor" Pinot Noir. then moved on the the Burgundies of Domaine Henri Jouan. -
SLAKED | SUNDAY, MARCH 23, 2008 2005 Rhone Valley Reds. Extraordinary So Far. 2005 is one of the most fabled vintages in French history. An exceptional vintage like 2005 means that the quality of the wines from everyone is racheted up: normally good producers make very good wine; very good producers make exceptional wine, etc. 2005 Bordeaux in my experience has had a somewhat mixed showing thus far. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2008 Jenny & Francois Portfolio Tasting In case you're not familiar with Jenny & Francois , they import natural wines from all over France, from heavy hitters like Burgundy to unsung heroes like the Côtes de Duras (just northeast of Bordeaux, and considered Southwest France). But I might not buy a bottle at almost $30 - too much else happening in Burgundy. -
SLAKED | TUESDAY, MARCH 11, 2008 2005 Burgundy - at last! 2005 Burgundy! Like most wine lovers I've been awaiting the arrival of the 2005 vintage of Burgundy with baited breath. So I made my first foray north to pick out a case of 2005 Burgundy at Garnet on the Upper East Side, and to get my feet wet in this venerable (or venerably hyped) vintage. To the prices? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 2008 Tasting Other Blogger's Recommendations And now, I can recommend them to you: The first of two were recommended back in November as part of Wine Blogging Wednesday's Silver Burgundy theme. I'm always interested in finding excellent Burgundy at good prices so when I saw this at Moore Brothers in Manhattan, trying it one was a no-brainer. Very pure and fresh. So sue me -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MARCH 3, 2008 Three Loire 05's for the Cellar I've been checking in on my 2005 Loire wines lately, just to see how things are going. Loire-lovers have been touting 2005 as a great vintage, as good as 05 in Burgundy or Bordeaux. 2005 Foreau Vouvray Sec Clos Naudin , $29, Rosenthal Wine Merchant. 2005 Yannick Amirault Bourgueil Les Quartiers , $25, David Bowler Wine. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2008 My Bordeaux One Night Stand We drank a 2004, a vintage that might not need as much time to unwind as say, 2000, 2003, or 2005. The one negative thing I can say is this: the wine doesn't have the same energy that I experience in my favorite wines from Burgundy, Beaujolais, or the Loire Valley. I'm not trying to stoke the fires of the debate. Do you do that? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2008 2005 Bourgogne - a Few Favorites 2005 in Burgundy is one of those vintages in which all wines can be great. Yes, in 2005, some producers made humble regional wines that will knock your socks off. Their 2005 Bourgogne will run you more than $25 anyway. There are plenty of solid producers who made fantastic regional wine in 2005. And forth. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2008 A Wee Bit of Bottle Age always liked the Loire '05s, but this is ridiculous - 2005 in the Loire is just sick, and an amazing value. Don't let the wines get lost amidst the cacophony of 2005 Bordeaux and Burgundy. 2005 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Tuf feaux , $26. 2005 Filliatreau Saumur-Champigny La Grande Vignolle , $16. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2008 By the Glass - Wines that I Don't Like Edition The 2005 Domaine de Bellivière Coteaux du Loir Le Rouge-Gorge , $20, is a wine that I was stunned to find that I didn't like. When I read reviews I always wish for a sense of what the writer doesn't like - I get the fullest sense of their palate that way. But many people only write about the wines they like. He likes everything. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2008 My Foray into Blind ID'ing Wine Wine 2 - Burgundy shaped bottle, deep impression on the bottom, small rectangle shaped label. It Wine 3 - Burgundy shaped bottle, seemed kind of wider than most, felt like a white wine, and a minerally wine, something edgy. guessed the 2005 Kistler Durell Vineyard. It was, in fact 2005 Kistler, but Dutton Ranch, not Durell. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2008 So Far, I Stink at the Wine Splurge 2005 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St Denis 1er Cru Les Faconnieres , $50, 3 bottles. 2005 Ch â teau LaGrange , $52, 2 bottles. 2005 Ch â teau Monbousquet, $53, 2 bottles. 2005 Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Forneaux , $55, 3 bottles. 2005 Château Rieussec , $65 (750 ml). Why $50? Good buy. Oiy vey. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2008 Friuli Whites - WBW # 41 The flavor profile of these wines is so new to me, and to be honest, I'm not sure if it is a flavor profile that I like as much as that of Loire or Burgundy whites. 2005 Movia Pinot Grigio , $27 at Slope Cellars. They chose Friuli Whites as the theme, and an interesting theme it is. like it when WBW gets "esoteric" on us like this. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2008 Clos Rougeard.if I Ever Go Back BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time in October of 2005. So this is an investment, not just in the Burgundy type of cash, but also in cellar space. If you spend $55 on a Burgundy, are you definitely getting the finest example? And I am happy to report that we were successful on all fronts. Bordeaux? -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, JANUARY 4, 2008 LADIES AND GENTLEMEN MAY I PRESENT TO YOU THE ALPHABET CITY WINE CO. WINE STARTER KIT. Inquire within or by phone: (212) 505-WINE The wine we are offering is a 2005 cabernet sauvignon from Quinta de Viluco from the Maipo Valley named after the river that runs through the Andes Mountains to the Pacific. Everyone knows about Bordeaux and most people are somewhat familiar with the pinot noirs of Burgundy. So the Alphabet City Wine Co. Can you tell? Okay moving on. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 26, 2007 By the Glass - Just After X-Mas Edition Two holiday Burgundies worth mentioning. Not sure that it was so much better than, say the 2005 Macon-Charnay Vieille Vignes by Manciat, and that is literally one quarter of the price, but whatever. I'm in San Diego now at the in-law's place. My second round trip west coast flight of the week. She was wonderful, actually. That's my.02 -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2007 Sips and Vittles in Portland Other by the glass options included mostly younger wines from South Africa to Burgundy, and there was a 1993 Leoville Barton for $16/glass, if you like that kind of thing. It was pouring on Wednesday in Portland. Sometimes it would slow to a drizzle, but mostly it rained hard, from about 2 pm onward. don't own a car and I don't often drive. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2007 A Swing and a Miss This happens to me most often with Burgundy wines, as I have not yet had enough Champagne to be badly burned. In Burgundy, even in a "classic" (meaning not exceptional, but not bad either) vintage, a solid producer can sell wine, even village level wine, for over $50 a bottle. But Burgundy is hit or miss, and everybody knows it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13, 2007 My Favorites of 2007 Top three include 2006 Domaine de Cassagnoles Vin de Pays des Côte de Gascogne Reserve Cuvée Gros Manseng, 2005 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sur Lie Clos des Briords, and 2005 Le Bourcier Mâcon Cuv é e Elena. Dry Loire white : Foreau 2005 Vouvray Sec Clos Naudin. Loire red: 2005 Château de Coulaine Chinon Bonnaventure. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 2007 Winter Whites Who could argue with a red Burgundy to pair with your braised beef in red wine and a crusty baguette? Fall weather and then winter, with cozy fireplaces, hot stoves, and wool sweaters make me think of braises, stews, and other hearty food. And usually that means red wine. I'm certainly not here to argue, and I love exactly that pairing. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 2007 Silver Burgundy Roudup - WBW #39 Before getting into the specifics, here are a few things that jump out at me when looking at our notes as a whole: 9 out of the 14 reds tasted were from the 2005 vintage, a ripe and glorious year. As I keep hearing (and learning for myself) about Burgundy - it's all about the producer. Joe really liked the wine, a 2005. Because. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2007 2005 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay Vieilles Vignes Wine Blogging Wednesday is upon us again, installment # 39, and the theme is Silver Burgundy , or the wines of the Côte Chalonnaise or the Mâconnais. first tasted the 2005 Jean Manciat Mâcon-Charnay Vieilles Vignes back in March and I loved it - so rich and lean and complex. So now the wine.and what a wine it is folks! -
