Domaine de Bellivière - Keeping it Real in the Northern Loire
They have been fully organic since 2005 and as of 2008 farm their entire estate biodynamically. All of this is meaningless, though, if the wines don't taste good. Well, they taste very good, sometimes great. The single finest Bellivière wine I've had is the 2006 Rosiers (haven't tasted the other 06's yet though).

Our first wine, a 2005 Hendry Zinfandel Block 28 Napa ** put on weight after decanting but failed to achieve the qualitative heights of the 2004 in terms of concentration and depth. Look for good dark fruits and mild loam, but no "wow."

There are also Special Club and "Vintage Collection" wines that tend to be old vines cuvées.

The bottle that Brooklynguy and I drank together this week was from 2004, disgorged in April of 2007, meaning that it spent about two years on the lees. Back in February of 2007, I wrote in my notebook that the 2004 "will vie with the 2002 as the greatest Terre de Vertus that Larmandier has made so far."

And because our wine tastes are quite diverse. I'm in a really great wine group now, and great ones are hard to find, trust me. This is a great one because the people are intelligent, easy going, and excellent company. And also because we came up with a nice system for running the group. We rotate as hosts and the host provides everything.

    The Perfect Thanksgiving Wine
Or is it simply a decent wine, that doesn't break the bank, that tastes good and goes down smooth and doesn't leave you hungover? Hendry Block 28 Napa Valley Zinfandel 2004 ** With succulent minerality and blackberry charm, this will suit those who want complex, noteworthy wines for dinner. But more on that, later. don't really know.

    NEW WINES FROM ITALY
Not long ago Gary Grunner--a wine aficionado with a special interest in Italian wines-invited me over to his house for a tasting. Then you taste the intense ripe cherries, plums and spices and then a bit later chocolate, more spices and black pepper. At first the nose reveals roasted meats, toast and ripe concentrated stewed prunes.

First it was the extensive tasting of Israeli wines by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate ("Israeli wine isn't an oddity any more, and it is certainly not just for those who keep kosher").  The Golan Heights winery's Yarden 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon came in at 91.  Happy Israeli wine tasting! 2004 Napa Valley Merlot **+ Thoroughly enjoyable. From a notoriously wet spring (which I experienced first hand) through a long mild fall, the many 2005 Napa cabernets I have tasted are all over the place quality-wise. This opened up very nicely after a few hours, but never really showed the complexity and big fruit of the 2004 Merlot.

    Burgundy Confusion: Episode 74
The fruit was bright and pleasant, the texture was right, and the wine tasted good, but there was nothing particularly interesting about the wine. The confusing thing is this: the Chambolle-Musigny was a 2004 by none other than Georges/Christophe Roumier, the legendary producer whose wines are collected by the most fancy-pants of wine folk.

What's the right thing to do at an enormous industry wine tasting? Do you try to taste every wine being poured? Do you find some way of narrowing the field, and taste only a subset of the wines? used to try to taste everything but in the end I learned less that way, and did not really enjoy myself.
