    Understanding Barolo
As an exuberant young student I had been eager to taste the regions I studied, yet the upper-market wines from Piedmont seemed totally out of reach. Tasting Barolo. At a recent tasting of very young Barolos, I identified wines I liked yet have at least a decade to evolve but they are named below. The Grape. The Region.

Why Wine: Atwater Estate Vineyards Cabernet-Merlot 2007
In the mouth, the taste was more mature than I thought it should be at it's young age, soft and mellow with a hint of chocolate. Sometimes when you least expect it, you open what may becomes your new favorite bottle of wine. Tonight I opened one of my remaining bottles of Finger Lakes wine purchased at my last tour in December. Alcohol: 13.0%

To do so, I will have to taste, I mean drink, more wines that I never tried or wines I just never liked. That was not until I tasted and reviewed a Paso Robles Zin from Agent for Change. More intense than the last Zin I tasted and liked, but still not as bold or peppery as most I've had. It just never happened. Alcohol 14.5%

Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Atwater Estate Vineyards Syrah 2007
Almost all that I had ever tasted were the Shiraz from Australia. While visiting Damiani Wine Cellars on Seneca Lake this past spring I tasted an excellent Syrah and I was sold. Then again maybe I just have to taste a few more and that's not a bad thing now, is it? From that day on I was a fan.

Just too many varieties of grapes yet to be tasted for a first time. This has been one fantastic year of enlightenment for me when it comes to all things wine. Believe I may do a year end article on the subject. If I do, I will have to include the German grape, Dornfelder as one of the highlights.

** Disclaimer: I received these wines from Martellotto Wine s One of the benefits of writing a wine blog is the occasional UPS delivery of wine to taste and review on the blog. don't know why I have a problem with Zin's, but for some reason I never did get into the very full body, high alcohol and very peppery taste I always got, until now.

You feel and taste all of these aromas on the palate and the finish is dry and very long. Sometime near the end of the year, I would like to post all that I have learned and the wines that I have come to enjoy over the past two years. Tonight, Shirley baked trout with Cajun spices, cole slaw, corn and Cajun fries.

Tasting the Wines of Jaques Lassaigne
Jenny & François import these wines for the east coast, and they organized a tasting in a small and very comfortable setting that actually encouraged conversation, instead of merely offering a glass and a spit bucket. And converse we did - I spoke with Emmanuel for about an hour while tasting, and I learned a great deal about his wines.

Why Wine: Joeshico Wine Review; Billsboro Winery, Sauvignon Blanc 2008
remembered commenting on an older post that this was may be the best Sauvignon Blanc I tasted outside of my favorites from New Zealand. I think it gets a little scary when you choose a not so good wine for three consecutive nights. That happened this week. But, halllelujah, tonight was a bit more successful. But, there are many differences.

Natural wines, premox, chenin blanc, 07 Port and Rhone – John Gilman
Tasting through her recent vintages here- particularly in a vineyard such the premier cru of Clavoillon (which used to be a bid of an underperformer in the Leflaive stable)- it is pretty hard not to agree with her wholeheartedly in the greater signature of terroir in the Leflaive wines today. Natural wines are growing in popularity.

Aroma's were more floral like roses or hyacinths with a bit of peach and the taste was a little more fruity and dry. My first taste of Gewurztraminer was from White Springs and I'm sure of picking up more whites at the December " Deck the Halls " weekend. Alright, here's my dilemma or at least one of them. Tonight Shirley and daughter Pam are making 'halupkies' for dinner. The dilemma, I have no clue as to what wine to open. That only added to the dilemma.

Wine of the Week - López de Heredia Viña Cubillo
BrooklynLady thought this was a Burgundy wine when she first smelled and tasted. The current vintage is the 2003, and I think that another year plus of bottle age has been great for the 2002.
