Champagne Notes from the Martin Scott Portfolio
decided to focus on Champagne and Burgundy, and to taste whatever Loire wine I came across, but there are not many of those in the portfolio. 2002 Hermann J Wiemer Blanc de Blancs (8) I love this NY State winery's Rieslings, and it was fun to taste the sparkling wines. cannot enjoy myself that way. He owes a guest post, I would say.

    Recent Sips - July 2007
must say, though, that I have not been as impressed by their recent offerings as I was by wines from 2002 and earlier. first tasted this wine in the company of a few phenomenal Burgundies, and it was clearly the inferior wine. I'm not taking sides in the rose debate. Instead I will just say that this is my favorite rose this summer.

    Wine Dinner Envy
Innocent's winemaker, will be doing two outrageous wine dinners jointly with Volnay Burgundy legend (in Mark's mind anyway) Jean-Pierre Charlot of Domaine Joseph Voillot (Volnay). Both dinners will feature 2005 red and white Burgundies from Voillot and 2005 Pinot noir and Chardonnay from St. Voillot 2002 Volnay 1er Fremiets / St.

    Recent Sips - June 2007
Here are some notes on wines that did not get their own post: Burgundy 2005 Jean Manciat Macon Charnay Vieille Vignes , $21 (Chambers Street Wines). I've been recommending this wine to my friends who are looking to get into the 05 Burgundy game without breaking the bank. loved this wine back in March at the real Wine Attack Tasting.

For the 4th, an American Wine
He has a lovely looking 2002 1er Cru Meursault Les Charmes, but again, I don't feel quite right cracking open Deetrane's fancy wine. The wine was DELICIOUS, and it resembled good Burgundy Chardonnay far more than any California Chard I've had. 2002 Stony Hill Napa Valley Chardonnay , about $30 retail. know, sounds odd, right?

Wine with the In-Laws, San Diego Style
2002 Michel Colin-Deleger Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes - Such a pronouncedly different style from the Hafner. I'm lucky because my father in-law likes wine and keeps some good bottles in the house. was impressed with the two wine stores I went into. 500 bottles of wine in the bins! None of the primary fatty fruit remaining.

    Roundup - Recent Sips
Since I never seem to be able to write here about all of the tasting that interests me (and that potentially would interest you), here is a roundup of interesting wines from the past month: Burgundy (yes - I still drink Burgundy wines, and still love them the most!) 2002 Sylvan Cathiard Vosne Romanee , $25 (secondary market).

    Okay, Now for My Case
Sad, because the good stuff is enchanting and reasonably priced, a steal when you consider the silly prices of white Burgundy, for example. 2002 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses , $17. 2002 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Les Perrieres , $26. 2002 Clos Rougeard Les Poyeaux , $55. That's pretty intense. Enjoy

Notes From the Dressner Real Wine Attack Tasting
My 4's 2002 Domaine du Closel Savennieres les Coteaux Moelleux , $28 - this is a rare sweet wine from Savennieres, crafted only in certain vintages. loved the 2002 and 2003 vintages of this wine. Warning : this is a really long post you might need to read it over several days, or during one day in which you are really bored at work.

Value Priced Burgundy - an Update
I've been on a serious Burgundy kick for almost 6 months now, since before BrooklynLady and visited the region. read more about Burgundy and Pinot Noir than about anything else that is wine-related. It has the depth of aroma and flavor, the elegance, the richness, and the power of Burgundy wines that command far higher prices.

Getting Myself in Shape for Loire Reds
Yeah, I'm compiling my value Burgundy list, but there is nothing there that can compare, in my opinion, with the the pleasure you can find in a $15 bottle of one of these young wines. I've been so focused on Burgundy lately that I haven't had a Loire red in a little while. Dark translucent garnet color, like a Burgundy wine.

    A Classic Burgundian Pairing
Okay, you can stop feeling sorry for me now, and check out this neat bit of cooking we did the other night, paired well with a regional wine from Burgundy. In Burgundy, I was so glad to see chestnuts pop up so often on menus and in grocery stores. 2002 Domaine Joseph Roty Bourgogne Cuvee Presonnier, $28 at Crush.

    Dinner with the In-Laws
Father-in-law stunned us by bringing to this dinner a bottle of mature Burgundy wine, a 1993 Volnay 1er Cru by Robert Ampeau, a producer I had never encountered. Silky texture, flavors of cooked red fruit and clay earth with some dried leaf character - an interesting and delicious mature Burgundy. Deep golden color, very inviting.

Sotheby's Pre Sale Tasting Report; Part 2
The lineup of white Burgundies certainly was impressive on paper, with notable wines at various stages of maturity. 2002 William Fevre Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru - Aromas of white flowers, wet stones, and lime. And what of the white wines? was not so impressed, though, overall. None of them really hit me where it counts. Pleasant.

    Catching up a Little Bit
We ate leftover roast lamb for dinner with butternut squash puree, and I opened a bottle of 2002 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Yamhill Cuvee. 2002 was a great year for Willamette Valley Pinots, and Domaine Serene is considered to be a top Oregon producer. 2002 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Yamhill Cuvee , $35. We are all miracles.

Following up on a Buying Strategy Idea
have been sampling some older experiments using this strategy, a few 2001 Pinots from Oregon and Burgundy, 2002 was considered the star vintage in both regions. This kind of thinking is especially important for me now that every few years it seems to be "the vintage of the century" in Burgundy (or Bordeaux, others too).

    Revisiting Some 2001's
For example, 2002 was considered to be a great year in Burgundy and in Oregon, and the wines tend to be priced accordingly. In both regions, 2001 was not as highly regarded, particularly difficult in Burgundy where hail and limited sunlight wrecked havoc in certain areas. Same thing in Burgundy. Reliable producer?

    How to Explore Burgundy?
I am starting to feel more comfortable as a consumer of Burgundy wine. tried a 1998 Domaine Robert Groffier Bourgogne a few weeks ago and I really liked it, then the 2002 Bourgogne too. have much more of a sense of what I am looking for in a wine and I have a bit more confidence now when evaluating the selection at a store. Not good.

End of the Year Round Up
Oregon 2002 St Innocent Seven Springs , $32. It was, in fact, closed down, but even so, this clear dark purple wine exhibited the finesse, depth, mix of clean fruit, forest, and animal flavors and the balance of a fine Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits. 2002 Domaine Robert Groffier Bourgogne , $26. Remondo , $24. Good acidity.

A Great Tasting at Moillard Grivot
am not usually drawn to large negociant houses, but I read through Nikolai Vogel & Kilian Fitzpatrick's lovingly written descriptions of their Burgundy tasting trips. 2002 Domaine Charles Thomas Nuits St Georges , (price info lost). 2002 Moillard Grivot Moray St Denis 1er Cru Les Monts Luisants , E19. Well balanced, young.

    Weekend Wines and Eats
Before sharing comments about this past weekend's food and wine, I want to mention a great series of posts I came across while searching online for help planning our Burgundy trip. German guy, I think, and his coworker at something called Black Ink visited Burgundy each year for 5 years and lovingly describe their wine and food experiences.

Golden Nugget of a Tasting, Part II
The highlight for me though was tasting 6 Burgundies, 3 of them Grand Cru wines. have never tasted Grand Cru Burgundy before and I'll tell you, it felt great - something I could get used to. The first Burgundy we tasted was maybe the best, a 1992 Compte Georges de Vogue Bonnes Mares. Pronounced lead. No finesse or elegance.

Wines of Catherine and Pierre Breton
The wine list is called "eccentric" by reviewers, which means that there are no bottles from Bordeaux or Burgundy, even though almost every bottle on the list is French. BrooklynLady picked a 2002 Catherine et Pierre Breton Clos Senechal to go with our dinner that night and we loved it. But the food was excellent. love this wine!

    Domaine du Closel Savennieres
These are impressive and serious wines, and represent an amazing value when considered with wines of equal quality from Burgundy, for example. Savennieres is one of the great Loire Valley appellations, producing amazing white wines made from the chenin blanc grape. Many wines made in Savennieres can improve for decades with cellaring.

Oregon Pinot Noir - Some Thoughts on the 2004 Vintage
It was very tasty wine, very low priced compared to Burgundy, and to a 21 year old who was just learning about wine, that Oregon label was a million times easier than dealing with the labels of Burgundy! tasted this alongside a 93 premier cru burgundy and a 2002 Moray St Denis. My favorite recent vintage is 2001.
