    Very comparable to French Burgundy in my opinion. Sometimes you just get lucky when searching out a wine. dropped into a local shop this week and during a conversation with the shop owner I had asked if he had any wines from Oregon. He did. He actually had one. It was a Pinot Noir. Pricey, but good. My Notes: It is earthy with a little mint.

    Almost two weeks ago at the Michael Skurnik Grand Portfolio Tasting I tasted through Pierre Yves Colin-Morey's lineup of beautiful white Burgundies and it was really an amazing experience.     Online Wine Auction Prices Continue to Drop
    Grand cru Burgundy has also showed significant drops. Even good vintages like 2001 are under pressure, with some wines, like Sloan Estate, suffering 33% drops in opening bid prices, and still there are no bidders. 2003 Screaming Eagle can be had for $1000/bottle; the 2001 is still offered at over $1100, down from $1300.

    The picture doesn't do it justice (poor lighting in the club) but this was a spectacular bottle of wine. Light grapefruit color. Utterly closed on the nose: the predominant note here was warm road tar, with secondary notes of anise and celery seed and a hint at frozen fresh orange juice. Wonderfully pure fruit.     So this is an investment, not just in the Burgundy type of cash, but also in cellar space. If you spend $55 on a Burgundy, are you definitely getting the finest example? 2001 Saumur-Champigny (tasted in September, 2007). 2001 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux (tasted in September, 2006). This retails for approximately $35.

    A Swing and a Miss
    This happens to me most often with Burgundy wines, as I have not yet had enough Champagne to be badly burned. In Burgundy, even in a "classic" (meaning not exceptional, but not bad either) vintage, a solid producer can sell wine, even village level wine, for over $50 a bottle. But Burgundy is hit or miss, and everybody knows it.

    As I keep hearing (and learning for myself) about Burgundy - it's all about the producer. Lafon's Montrachet and Meursault sell for LOTS of money, and are some of the more sought after wines in Burgundy. Dr. Vino also tasted a regional wine , an Aligoté, the other white grape of Burgundy. Some are surprisingly inexpensive.

    2001 Palacios Remondo Rioja Propiedad H. It was, in fact, closed down, but even so, this clear dark purple wine exhibited the finesse, depth, mix of clean fruit, forest, and animal flavors and the balance of a fine Burgundy from the Cote de Nuits. loved the Lafarge Volnay 2001, just the village wine.     That's right, I have now finished posting about our Burgundy trip. had a green salad, something I missed while in Burgundy, BrooklynLady had snail risotto (I was so proud of her). We went with the Bordeaux flow and enjoyed a bottle of 2001 Chateau Gloria, St Julien, E38 with our dinner. Highly recommended. Highly recommended.

    The Domaine Paul Pernot was the largest producer we visited, although Pernot is middle sized by Burgundy standards.     The Hospices de Beaune ( pictured below ) has served the poor and sick in Burgundy for over 500 years now. There are amazing wine shops in Beaune, any of which carries loads of great Burgundy bottles, not to mention the Champagne and Cremant. 2001 Armand Rousseau Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru Clos du Ruchottes. can't spend $58?

    Three from Burgundy
    Last night I had the distinct pleasure of tasting three Burgundies, one white and two red. had to rely on my "tasting memory" to try to understand the white wine, but comparing the reds offered me some clear insights about red wine in Burgundy. The 2001 JM Boillot Puligny Montrachet is the white that Deetrane served at his wedding.

    Oregon Pinot Noir - Some Thoughts on the 2004 Vintage
    It was very tasty wine, very low priced compared to Burgundy, and to a 21 year old who was just learning about wine, that Oregon label was a million times easier than dealing with the labels of Burgundy! My favorite recent vintage is 2001. tasted this alongside a 93 premier cru burgundy and a 2002 Moray St Denis.
