A WINE STORY | MONDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2011 Day 1: Fine & Rare Wine Program Now the California wine conversation was interesting, because we were just served two wines, a Merryvale Chardonnay 2008 and a Domaine Roumieu Bonnes Mares 2000. Of course, everyone loved the Roumieu -- the 2008 Merryvale raised eyebrows as some asked "is this new vintage 'fine wine' and what is a good definition of fine wine.'". -

A WINE STORY | MONDAY, MARCH 21, 2011 VOS Selections: Austrian Wine with Andi Kollwentz and Rainer Wess In the course of the seminar we saw an incredible slideshow detailing the very different terroir - Austria is a tapestry of gneiss and schist and 2000 meter mountains and lakes. My favorite of the Rainer Wess wines was the Riesling Achleiten 2008, which had a smokey minerality that came out of the dark granite soil. -

DR. VINO | FRIDAY, MARCH 11, 2011 How does cabernet franc age? A visit to Domaine Baudry Matthieu, the jovial, thirty-something son of Bernard who has been with the domaine since 2000, led us in a tasting of the more-or-less current releases and a few back vintages as well. The tannins are fine; the wine in 2009 exhibits fine tannins while the 2008 could benefit from more bottle age (or a good decant). -

DR. VINO | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2010 Talking Chenin Blanc with Ken Forrester of South Africa tasted his 2000 Chenin Blanc, a $14 wine with ten years age on it. The FMC 2008 (about $65), comes from unirrigated, low-yield, 42-year-old bush vines, grown organically (but uncertified since 2002 because of onerous fees, Ken says). Ken Forrester likes Chenin Blanc. Just don’t call it Steen. g/l, and 12 g/l residual sugar.). -

At the outset, it was a single vineyard wine of tiny production. -
DR. VINO | TUESDAY, MAY 5, 2009 A tale of two Pichons - peace in Pauillac On the Pichon-Baron side, things are really cranking under Christian Seely who took over in 2000, which produced an excellent wine. DR. VINO | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2008 John Gilman - View from the Cellar - On collecting and collectible values John Gilman is one of the people who I have enjoyed getting to know in 2008. What’s a top wine experience you had in 2008 where the context mattered as much as the wine? Except maybe he’s not so foolhardy since, unlike a blog, he actually charges for his newsletter! broke it up in to two postings. Onward! And five years? -
SLAKED | FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2008 Chateau Cantemerle ** So on the last trip to the cellar I brought back a couple bottles of Chateau Cantemerle -- one bottle of the 2000, one 2003 -- which we opened last night with hamburgers (90% lean, over toasted whole wheat bread, smothered with Gruyère, grilled onions, and dijon mustard) and Mary Ellen's Double Dutch German Chocolate Cake. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2008 Loire Chenin Blanc Wine Dinner I'm in a really great wine group now, and great ones are hard to find, trust me. This is a great one because the people are intelligent, easy going, and excellent company. And because our wine tastes are quite diverse. And also because we came up with a nice system for running the group. We rotate as hosts and the host provides everything. -

EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2008 GREECE PART I: UNDERSTANDING HOW IT ALL BEGAN By the time the Bronze Age hit around 2000 BC the grape vine was being cultivated. Here we go. Wine has been embedded in Greek culture since the Neolithic era. Festivals were created around it and it was even given its own God, Dionysus, with a theater dedicated to him on the slopes of the Athenian Acropolis. And they had wine. -

VIGNA UVA VINO | MONDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2008 Boscaini Marano Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2000 This red wine from Veneto is a Valpolicella with light weight and a pale ruby color. On the nose is a fragrant cherry with mild glycerine aromas and on the palate waves of ripe fruit. It finishes with a silkiness that leaves me with a feeling of balance and maturity. It has a very mild alcohol content of 12% and it's in the $14 range. -

EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2008 CHARDONNAY: RESEARCHING THE HUMBLE BEGININGS OF ONE OF THE WORLDS MOST POPULAR GRAPES It was first mentioned in the 1st century AD by Columella a Roman writer and agriculturalist so it is generally agreed that Pinot Noir or the pinot family is at least 2000 years old. Researching the origin of a grape is fascinating. It is part theory and part science and part history. The soldiers were now the carriers of seeds and foods. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2008 Krug, Cristal, Dom Perignon.and More. The flight that was by far my least favorite happened to be from Moet (thumbs down on all 6 wines, including the 2000 Dom Perignon), a producer that represents the antithesis of healthy farming. I was incredibly lucky to participate recently in the Wine & Spirits Magazine Champagne tasting panel. wish I could do this every week. -

EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, AUGUST 29, 2008 THE QUESTION OF SCREW CAP PART II Yes, the Clare Valley Initiative produced some great results with reports of their Rieslings from that famous 2000 bottling tasting wonderful now but what about red wine? This is where it gets really interesting. The question of the ability of wine to age under screwcap is a pretty deep issue. This is quite understandable. But wait a second. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, AUGUST 24, 2008 What I Drank on my Summer Vacation 2000 Voirin-Jumel Champagne Millésimé , $37. 2000 Dessilani Ghemme Riserva , price unknown. Another summer comes to an end. love summer in New York City. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2008 THE QUESTION OF SCREW CAP PART I And in 2000 a group of Southern Australian Clare Valley producers disgruntled with the susceptibility of cork banned together to release 250,000 bottles of their well-known Riesling under screw cap enclosures bought form a French Company. What a hot issue this cork versus screw cap craziness is. Man did that throw me for a loop. Cheers -
SLAKED | FRIDAY, AUGUST 15, 2008 2000 Henri Goutorbe "Special Club" Grand Cru Champagne ** A " Special Club " bottling from Goutorbe , I can't say I enjoyed this 2000 Grand Cru from Ay any more than the house's NV Cuvee Prestige. VIGNA UVA VINO | WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2008 Interview with Vito Polosa of Aroma Kitchen & Winebar Right now we have a 2000 Bordeaux blend from Veneto that is on our list for $68 that I have seen in Italy selling for over $130 Euros. BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2008 I Learned that I Know Nothing About Wine 2000 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre. The more I learn about wine, the more I realize that I don't know. This was also true when I played a lot of chess, when I was getting into economics courses in grad school, basically anytime I've undertaken anything of any import. Same is true with wine, I would say. Who knew. -
WINE TASTING GUY | TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2008 Highly regarded WINE BAR They even have wines from Israel (which you all know I think is great) as well as a very enviable "reserve list" mainly comprised of Bordeaux & Burgundy (with some Napa Cab, & Barbaresco thrown in for good measure) ranging in price from about $200 per bottle up to $1750 for a 2000 Chateau Margaux. The good: the staff was really great. -
SLAKED | SUNDAY, JUNE 29, 2008 Benton Lane Pinot Noir Willamette Valley 2000 ** This took a while to open up. The fruit seems to have faded and the sweetness is gone. It's dry, complex, and drinking very nicely this year. Mushrooms, figs, dessicated currants and black truffles. -
SLAKED | MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2008 Seven Days Seven Wines 2000 A tremendous wine. The flood plains recede in Iowa, Al Gore endorses Obama, and I finally have a chance to note some of the wines we've been swirling around here. It's been a crazy week, sort of. Now it's time to focus back on something closer to home: summer whites (but not all). Listed in no particular order. and peaches. Where? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, JUNE 13, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles had the 2000 Huet Brut and I really liked it, but that was years ago. 2002 Huet Vouvray Pétillant Brut , $33, Robert Chadderon Selections. It is without hesitation that I can say this is the finest non-Champagne sparkling wine that I've had. And it's better than many a Champagne, if you count Veuve Clicquot and the like. -
WINE TASTING GUY | THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 2008 Gourmet food WITHOUT WINE (and New Zealand Pinot) Nice and refreshing on a warm summer day, and said to be "food neutral" the Yarden 2000 Blanc du blanc would be served as the guests arrive. A friend from college is running for city council here in NYC. When he and I first spoke about the event I thought how fabulous it would be for me to pair each of the courses with a wine. Enjoy! -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2008 Belle Pente - Old World Pinot from Oregon The estate vineyard was converted to organic farming in 2000 and they began to use some of the principals of biodynamics in 2005. Pinot Noir in Oregon's Willamette Valley is, in my opinion, still trying to figure out what it wants to be. Is it a new world style wine, dense, concentrated, and fruit forward? One of my favorites is Belle Pente. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, MAY 30, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles Lassaigne makes at least five wines, but I've seen only two of them here in New York: this Blanc de Blancs and also the 2000 vintage wine, a non-dosage wine, one bottle of which is presently napping in my little cellar. NV Jacques Lassaigne Brut Cuv é e Les Vignes de Montgueux , $38, Jenny & Francois Selections. -
WINE TASTING GUY | SUNDAY, MAY 4, 2008 Day in Napa She proceeded to open a 2000 Syrah that they recently re-released and it was great. My day began in LA with an early flight from LAX to SFO. rented a car at SFO and made my way to wine country. My day started with one of the places I neglected to take notes. Havens had some really nice wine. The wines that stood out though were their Syrahs. -
WINE TASTING GUY | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008 Polaner tasting standouts LdH wines are very well regarded coming out of Rioja, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to try a 2002, 2000, 1999, 1987, 1981 & 1976 Rioja. The 2002 Cubillo Crianza & 2000 Bosconia Reserva had a nice ruby color & good minerality, earth and fruit. This could help to make events of this size more manageable. don't know. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2008 What Would You Pour? GW Bush - 2000 Yellow Tail Merlot. The other night Alice Feiring stopped by for a glass of wine. That's right, Alice Feiring! She was en route to an Olde English Ball (another story entirely), and she stepped out on the deck with BrooklynLady and me for a glass. What do you pour for Alice Feiring? Was I really shaking as I poured the wine? -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2008 A Few Mature Wines 2000 Domaine des Roches Neuves Saumur-Champigny La Marginale , $12 (secondary market). I only began cellaring wine a few years ago, so if I drink a mature wine at home it means that I bought a wine that some one else cellared for me. BrooklynLady and I loved this wine when we visited Adelsheim Winery. Not that they're sub-par, they are not. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, APRIL 18, 2008 Friday Night Bubbles Bouchard is an infant of a Champagne house, created in 2000 and located in the Côte des Bar, the southern part of Champagne where the climate resembles that of Burgundy, and where Pinot Noir is the most common grape. NV Cedric Bouchard Blanc de Noir Inflorescence , about $55, Polaner Selections. I'm so glad we did - we both loved it. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2008 Wine Splurge Update Back in January I lamented my past wine splurge results. Many of you commented with excellent suggestions, some of which I wound up using for Splurge 2007. Yeah, just like the NY State legislature, my budget comes out later than it's supposed to. But the good news is that I had a little more to spend than the $400 that I originally planned on. -

BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, MARCH 17, 2008 Gambero Rosso Tasting 2000 Cav. I wasn't going to write about this because I don't have much of anything nice to say. But I've been persuaded to just do it anyway, to tell you what I thought. First, though, I must remind you that I rarely, if ever, drink Italian wine. And I've never even heard of most of the producers I tasted. Also, the place was a total zoo. -

There is absolutely no reason to drink cheap Italian wine. Okay, let me qualify that. Outside of an Italian restaurant that serves nothing else, there is absolutely no reason to drink cheap Italian wine. That is simply unacceptable to me. -
VIGNA UVA VINO | TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2008 A Taste of International Varietals at Italian Wine Merchants • Movia 2000 Veliko Rosso (Friuli- Cabernet Sauvignon. Most of the wines I talk about in this blog don't go for more that $20, But last weekend I treated myself to a tasting at Italian Wine Merchants (Founded by Sergio Esposito, Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich) and sampled six wines from various regions in Italy. Next, we dove right in. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2008 My Foray into Blind ID'ing Wine guessed the 2000 Smith Haut-Lafitte Blanc. Some people can taste a wine blind, knowing nothing about it at all, and are able to identify it. I've heard of people who can do this in incredible detail, down to the vineyard and vintage. must say, I've never seen this, but I believe that it's true. Do these people train for this? was wrong. -
EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 2008 Expressing The Truth Behind the Varietal By the 2000's Sicily was ready to come onto the American market and do it's dance around the wine lists of States. From the south I chose to wax on wax off about the Nero d'Avola. Five years ago Sicily was not even close to being seen as a legit wine-producing region. For me there are two schools of Nero d'Avola. and at In Vino. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2008 More Terry Theise Grower Champagnes 2000 Chartogne-Taillet Cuv é e Fiacre Brut , $55 - I like Chartogne-Taillet's wines. I was fortunate to be able to attend the Michael Skurnik tasting at TriBeCa Grill in mid January, and amidst the great lineup of German, Austrian, and French wines, there was of course a Terry Theise Champagne section. Much better. That's a strong statement. -

EAST VILLAGE WINE GEEK | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2008 DRINKING A 2005 BENSON FERRY OLD VINE ZINFANDEL WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND They kept at it and in 2000 it was discovered that The Zinfandel/Primitivo strain was a parent of Plavac Mali. You either love it or you hate it. You either know of it or associate with a blush. Is it related to Primitivo or not? Where does it come from and why is it so popular and plentiful in California and not so much everywhere else. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 23, 2008 So Far, I Stink at the Wine Splurge 2000 Paul Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles , $64. Just like you, I have my limits on what I'll spend on a bottle of wine. When I'm buying a case of wine for everyday drinking purposes, the average cost per bottle is about $15. My mistakes have been at the splurge price point, which for me is wine over $50. Why $50? Good buy. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | FRIDAY, JANUARY 18, 2008 Non-Dosage Champagne 2000 Chateau Tour Grise Saumur Brut Non Dose , $16 at Slope Cellars. If you're anything like me then you've been thinking recently about non-dosage Champagne. mean, who wouldn't be - it's such an interesting issue. Non-dosage Champagne has no sweetener added to the wine used to top up the bottle after disgorgement. No sugar? Grower Champagne. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2008 Five Nights of Oregon Pinot - Part V tasted the 2000 Brut 3 years ago and I really liked it, by the way. We return to Shea Vineyard on this, the fifth and final night of our Oregon Pinot festival. festival that took place right here in the confines of our own apartment. But a festival nonetheless. It is interesting to note that St Innocent has no estate vineyard. Amazing. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2008 Five Nights of Oregon Pinot Noir - Part I have tasted Shea Wine Cellars wines from several vintages in the past and enjoyed them very much, notably the 2000 and 2003 Estate wines (a blend of grapes from many of the vineyard blocks). I've been a bit neglectful of my Oregon wines lately. I've become such an old world wine nut that I seem to reach for a Burgundy every time I want Pinot. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2008 Clos Rougeard.if I Ever Go Back Here are notes I've saved from each of the four Clos Rougeard wines I have had, all over dinner: 2000 Saumur-Champigny Les Poyeux (tasted in August, 2007). BrooklynLady and I went to France together for the first time in October of 2005. And I am happy to report that we were successful on all fronts. This retails for approximately $35. -
BROOKLYN GUY LOVES WINE | SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2007 Adventures in Wine Buying. The Final Chapter Tenuta Rocca Barolo 2000 x 3 WS: Silky and tight wine with pretty fresh rose and strawberry aromas and flavors. Best after 2008. Much better than the 2000. Best after 2008. Best after 2008. And we return to Deetrane's dark tale of intrigue, wading through the swamp of the secondary market. So they were grateful. | |
