    Tidbits
And the 1999 Eric Texier Cô te-Rôtie , a wine that fooled all of us. This one took the longest to come around, but when it did it was a classic old school bloody, meaty, black olivey, and very mineral northern Rhône Syrah. Oh no, my friends, I've been a very lucky Brooklynguy lately, in large part due to the generosity of friends.

    A Noël Verset Wine Dinner
Noël Verset made wines in Cornas that for many people define the potential greatness of the Northern Rhône and of Syrah. He grew an old Syrah clone called La Petite Syrah , a clone known for aromatic complexity. Young, tannic, acidic Northern Rhône Syrah might be best served after the more delicate and gentle mature wines.

Discovering the Wine Properties of AXA Millesimes
The 1999 was a beautiful gold color, with that curious candied rye seed once again, along with apricot, cling peaches, and tight minerals. Overall, we tried the 1993 (dried fruit spices, slight coffee), 1995 (creamy), 1997, 1999 (surprising blue cheese and candied lemon!). “A French insurance company owns a Chateau?” Perfect Berries.

Wells Guthrie’s Damascene conversion: “less is more”
The lanky, California maker of pinot noir, chardonnay, and syrah told me at his Sonoma winery that he had his conversion in 2005, after returning from a trip to Burgundy and the Rhone. He tasted the pinot noirs and syrahs he had been making since starting his own label, Copain Wines , in 1999. Search for Copain wines at retail.

Chateau Simone - Wine From Another Era
Last night I had dinner with a friend and we shared a bottle of 1999 Chateau Simone Palette Rouge , $48, Imported by Robert Chadderdon Selections. Just think about the alcohol level - the 1999 is 12.5%, and that was a pretty warm and ripe year. Will the 2007 Chateau Simone Rouge in 8 years taste the way the 1999 did last night?

    A Guest Sommelier
When I asked why Syrah would work if a Bordeaux wouldn't, Peter said that Syrah is very similar to Cabernet in structure, but far more versatile with food. Peter selected the 1999 Noël Verset Cornas , $65, Kermit Lynch Imports (although this bottle came from Crush and they bought it from a private collection). Sounds good.

    Arboleda Carmenère 2006
First released in 1999, Arboleda wines are made from fruit grown under strict sustainable viticultural practices from their best vineyards in the most prestigious viticultural regions of Chile. Wish I had a nice Canadian wine tonight so I could toast the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team on their winning of the Gold medal. Bring on the steaks!!!

Blaufränkisch: from zero to 60 in fifteen years
When I asked winemaker Roli Velich of the Moric winery which grape was the most apt comparison for Blaufränkisch, he suggested no fewer than three: pinot noir from Burgundy, Syrah from the Northern Rhone and Nebbiolo from Piedmont. Winemaker Uwe Schiefer brought an “old&# Blaufränkisch along–old being 1999. euro) a bottle.

"Hold on - Do I Like Châteauneuf du Pape?"
I'm discovering a taste for the Syrahs of the northern Rhône, but I haven't had a Châteauneuf du Pape that I really like, never mind a Gigondas, or Vacqueyras. It was another Châteauneuf du Pape, the 1999 Vieux Télégraphe la Crau. That was the question I asked during a great night with friends, dinner, and lots of wine.

A New Method for Cooking Steak, and the Best Bottle of Red Wine I've had in Months.
BrooklynLady requested a Rhône red, but the only bottle I had in the house turned out to be corked, an Ardeche Syrah by Joseph Gonon. We decided to open a special bottle, a 1999 Chateau Musar , $36, Imported by Broadbent Selections. Do not salt or season them in any way until right before cooking. Weird. Why not?

    2008 Monte Bello Futures Tasting
The Monte Bello team was also pouring the 1999, 1997, and 1995 Monte Bellos. The 1999 is still edgy with more woodsy notes and succulent strawberry and cream. The 2007 Lytton Estate Syrah/Grenache ** is also tight, almost light, almost too searing, with blue fruits and tons of tannin. There is no short answer. All are superb.

Wine of the Week - 2007 Qupé Marsanne
He grows hot climate grapes like Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne in the Santa Ynez Valley of California, where it is dry and hot, plain and simple. The bulk of the Marsanne for this wine is grown in the Ibarra-Young vineyard, which Lindquist has farmed organically since 1999. know, it's a California wine! Then I saw "12.5%

Screwcaps, scores, riesling, the Loire, Cali cab: John Gilman part two
By the way, the 1999 Penfolds Eden Valley Riesling served at that same tasting from magnums (sealed with corks) was stellar, and shows that the potential for this grape is very high in Australia, but the whole wine industry down under (and New Zealand is every bit as large of an offender on this score) has got to deal with the screwcap issue first.

    Wine Spectator's California Wine Experience
is a 100% syrah from Walla Walla, Washington State. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Cask 23" 1999 (?) I have a love/hate relationship with Wine Spectator. love their events. occasionally enjoy their magazine. routinely disagree with their wine scores (they gave Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello 2005 only 85 points - WTF are they thinking?!)

I Learned that I Know Nothing About Wine
Here are some of the wines that stood out for me: 1992 Edmunds St John Syrah Grand Heritage. 1999 Chateau Musar. The only one that seemed promising to me was a 1999 Geantet-Pansiot Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru , but even that did not have the same captivating factor as some of the other reds. Same is true with wine, I would say.

    Day in Napa
The wines that stood out though were their Syrahs. enjoyed the 2003 Havens Syrah but mentioned to Connie that I thought the nose was a little closed. She proceeded to open a 2000 Syrah that they recently re-released and it was great. Upon arriving we started with a very nice rose' made from Zin with a little Syrah.

    Polaner tasting standouts
Syrahs & 2 Cab's were tried at the tasting. The least cost prohibitive wine of the bunch was the 2006 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Clary Ranch and the one I found most interesting. Zinfandels and 1 Syrah. Given the time I only managed to taste their 1999 Paje Barbaresco. don't know. And there was 1 rose' that I tried.

    An Interview with Keith Beavers
It was a 1999 Paternoster Aglianico Del Vulture Don Anselmo. This beautiful Syrah is one of the most subtle and integrated Rhones I have had yet. The following is an interview with Keith Beavers, co-owner of In Vino Wine Bar & Restaurant and Alphabet City Wine Co. Keith also writes a blog called East Village Wine Geek. Lamb, Baby!

    Wine Splurge Update
couldn't bring myself to splurge yet on Syrah or on Italian or German wines. Back in January I lamented my past wine splurge results. Many of you commented with excellent suggestions, some of which I wound up using for Splurge 2007. Yeah, just like the NY State legislature, my budget comes out later than it's supposed to. More like $550.

An Imaginary Wine Vacation in Bandol
In addition to Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Grenache are also widely used, and Syrah and Carignan can be included in smaller amounts, up to 10% individually or up to 15% when they're both included. 1999 Galantin Longue Gard , $36. The dollar sucks and my daughter is only 1 year old. I'll answer for you - yes, it would be nice. Why Bandol?

    Recent Sips
1999 Domaine Roger Belland Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Clos Pitois , $ unknown. This lovely Syrah from Texier is an excellent value at $16. Light and lively with strong acidity, but not off-putting, as it can be in young Syrahs sometimes. The name of this wine is a little pun in French." ef.er.vey.cent." Effervescent.

    Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas Les Ruchets
It is about my experiences tasting this one wine, the 1999 Jean-Luc Colombo Cornas les Ruchets , $58 (but I bought mine on Wine Commune for $32). The red wines of the Northern Rhone are 100% Syrah (except in Cote-Rotie where a tiny amount of Viogner is sometimes added). hope to try some more great Syrah this year It needs food.
