    Whoa!
    1999 Clos Rougeard Saumur Bréze , Louis/Dressner Imports, price unknown. This Pradeaux rose is only a year old, but already offers a glimpse of what time in the cellar will do. Been so busy lately with work that I just haven't had time to write here. But I want to share some recent "Whoa," wine and food that really knocked me out.

    Soon Kristina came to escort me on my VIP tour, which included a tour of the cellars dug out of chalk.  Since the cellar was dug before electricity, there are places for candles. What was most interesting about the cellar is that there are number of bays, each designated to a different grand cru. Mumm in Reims. years.

    An Evening at Smith Haut Lafitte
    Always elegant hosts, the Cathiards ended the tasting with a round of Louis Roederer Brut Premier champagne, a tour of the cellar (Daniel takes great pleasure in opening it via remote control), and dinner. It was especially important to pay close attention to the tannins.". Of course, the second wines were delicious too.

    Comparing the 2008 and 2009 Vintages in Burgundy via Domaine Fourrier
    He said that 09 is similar to 1999, and that it is his second favorite vintage behind 1999. This one will definitely have a place in my cellar. Fourrier's importer Neal Rosenthal organized the event. Equally instructive is tasting the same wines from 2008 and 2009. He said that there were "very specific aromas above each vat."

    Visiting Champagne Salon in Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger
    For a Champagne house of such stature, it was a bit startling to see how little wine there is in the cellar. All of the Salon wine from the 1999, 2002, and 2004 vintages - all that there is for the whole world, is in this cellar (that looked kind of like a garage). And they don't make it very often. Calm, cool, collected.

    December Wines - a Laundry List
    Everyone reaches into the cellar for the good bottles to help celebrate the passing of another year. This is just the second release of this wine (Benoit Tarlant began making it in 1999) and already it is one of my favorite Champagnes. December tends to be a good month for wine drinking. This one, however, was thrilling. Very lovely.

    Grass fed sirloin steak cooked this way , salsa verde, and raw kale salad in olive oil and a dab of fish sauce. -- Oma , a raw cow's milk washed rind cheese made by descendants of the original Von Trapp family, and aged in the Jasper Hills cellars. The other night my friend Peter came over for dinner. Those are assertive flavors. Sounds good.

    Australian Riesling - Can it age? - Grosset, Steingarten and Leo Buring
    The fourth vintage of Polish Hill, it was bottled under cork (they switched to screwcap around 2000) and had mid-shoulder fill (if the bottle had shoulders, that is) and came directly from the cellar of Jeffrey Grosset (pictured right), one of only a few bottles remaining. At the outset, it was a single vineyard wine of tiny production.

    2008 Monte Bello Futures Tasting
    Difficult to compare to recent vintages (which have all included at least some cabernet franc or petit verdot) this is less flamboyant than the 2006 and 2007, and will benefit from extended cellaring. The Monte Bello team was also pouring the 1999, 1997, and 1995 Monte Bellos. There is no short answer. All are superb.

    Overachievers and Underachievers
    Overachievers: 1999 Domaine Leroy Meursault - Tough to get a handle on, but with time to re-taste and to think about the wine, it kind of blew me away. I'd take a half case for the cellar and re-visit in 5 years. Last week I had the opportunity to drink some pretty fancy wine. High expectations can color things. But you get my point.

Tags: Cellar Selection France 1996 Champagne 4 stars pale hay color with a light foam and very good effervescence, this 1996 displayed lime and salt stone notes with honeyed citrus and very mild dry herbs.

    Duty Free Wine Is Insane
    They are still chilling in the cellar. The 1999 Dom Perignon is now in Duty Free Shops worldwide, advertised at $169. Perrier Jouet's "Belle Epoque" 1999 (of which I am not a huge fan) retails for $99. I stopped in the Duty Free Shop on the return trip from Puerta Vallarta. Those same bottles now sell for $150.

    Wine Spectator's California Wine Experience
    Cellar for 2 years and enjoy for the next decade. Lewis Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2005 This is a standard (almost formulaic) three star wine with all the trimmings, fresh ripe fruits on the nose, big oak and blueberry on the palate, chalky sweet tannins, and a long sweet finish.     1999 Dom Perignon *
    The 1999 is different. I don't drink Dom Perignon as much as I'd like to, and frankly the wine confuses me a little. Older vintages like the 1990 and 1993 have been enjoyable, subtle, but ultimately sterile. There was nothing "wow' about them. Chardonnay on the nose, chardonnay on the palate, chardonnay chardonnay chardonnay.

My day began in LA with an early flight from LAX to SFO. rented a car at SFO and made my way to wine country. Nice wines. NOT A FRUIT BOMB.

    2004 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello **
    No two vintages of Monte Bello taste the same, and each vintage evolves in the cellar. have tasted Monte Bello cabernets from 1976, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004, and I am constantly amazed by the wine's ability to age gracefully. Monte Bello is my favorite winery/vineyard. These wines require patience.

    The bottle must be topped off before corking and cellaring.     I'm talking about a few bottles of 1999 Clivi Tocai Friulano, and probably a few bottles of banal Pinot Grigio along the way. The 1999 cost about $25. 2005 Movia Pinot Grigio , $27 at Slope Cellars. decided that I wanted to try their Sauvignon Blanc, but never made it back to Manhattan, and Slope Cellars had the Pinot Grigio.

    to lay down in the cellar for a while. 1999 Simi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley , $45. Its been a really good wine drinking month. 2001 Domaine Rollin Pernand-Vergelesses , $30 (375ml). Drank at a restaurant, so retail would be about $12-15, I imagine. This wine was thin, shrill, and green. Buy carefully in 2001.

    According to Hugh Johnson's Pocket Wine Book, there hasn't been an excellent vintage in Tuscany since 1999. This was just outstanding, and I have a few bottles sleeping in the cellar. First: give credit where credit is due. doing well according to Johnson. 2004 seems to have been a pretty good year. Clear ruby, straight to the rim.

    Here are the wines, with the few notes I wrote during the tasting: 1999 Bouchard Pere et Fils Clos Vougeot Grand Cru - Bright red color, oaky, tangy sour cherries. 1999 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru - Deep purple, reserved nose of blackberries and underbrush, indistinct palate.     Hospices de Beaune Auction and a "Special Tasting"
    would keep this in my cellar if I could afford to. 1999 Domaine de Lambrays Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru. We woke up to thick fog each morning, really thick. Eerily beautiful, and not easy for walking around or driving. The Hospices de Beaune ( pictured below ) has served the poor and sick in Burgundy for over 500 years now. 2003 P.

    You can read about Mark Vlossak the winemaker on the site, but I will add that he was the winemaker at Panther Creek through the 1999 vintage, another Willamette Valley winery with a solid reputation. And it probably would have improved for years with cellaring. don't know how to interpret this, or how to recognize it when I taste it.
