First, it was 1998 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle , at least $100 if you buy it now, imported by Frederick Wildman. The horses, the skinned rabbits, the tar, the other things I think of when I think of northern Rhône Syrah - not there. I haven't had a whole lot of northern Rhône wine. Why this wine? alcohol. So following the Bordeaux Blanc we opened a 1998 Chateau Monbousquet St. of Syrah was very interesting. A Sangiovese/ Syrah/Cab Franc blend was intriguing and determined to be a great food wine. got to try the Lopez de Heredia Gravonia Rioja Blanco Crianza 1998, Tondonia Rioja Blanco Reserva 1989 & Tondonia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva 1981. Syrahs & 2 Cab's were tried at the tasting. The least cost prohibitive wine of the bunch was the 2006 Arnot-Roberts Syrah Clary Ranch and the one I found most interesting. MORE >> -

Light and lively with strong acidity, but not off-putting, as it can be in young Syrahs sometimes. 1998 Chateau de Cabrieres Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee Prestige Tete de Cru , $33 (Wine Commune).
