The Wines of Chile: Casablanca Valley at Puro Chile
Pablo Morande first planted vines in Casablanca Chile in 1982 where he introduced Chardonnay, Riesling and in 1986 the first Sauvignon Blanc. He did this in a time and place where no one would have believed he would succeed. But Pablo saw the similarities to Carneros California, and took the calculated risk. The rest is history. alcohol.

In 1988, the company experimented with still wine and high-end varietals, leading to the creation of Terrazas del los Andes in 1998. Terraazas de los Andes is a beautiful property in Lujan de Cuyo with an amazing history. Poirier proved the region of Lujan de Cuyo is the best place to obtain wines of quality, due to the high grade vineyard.

Ruca Malen’s story began in 1998 when Jean Pierre Thaibaud , former chairman of Bodegas Chandon, and Jacques Louis de Montalembert decided to create a winery and focus on wines of excellence. We were able to taste six wines, beginning with the Ruca Malen Chardonnay 2009, very fresh tasting with good balance and tropical notes.

Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 Mini-Retrospective
There was very little excitement for it, with most professional wine writers comparing it to 1998. I remember the 2000 vintage as a whirlwind of excitement. This was before the Tech Bubble Burst, Enron imploded, 9/11, and eight years of Bush Part Deux. At the time, bridges were literally for sale. In other words, a loser. Unctuous and opaque.

    Overachievers and Underachievers
Underachievers: 1998 Chateau Simone Palette Blanc - Served blind at our dinner. Cuvée Réserve is made from the estate's older vines, 80% Pinot Noir and the rest Chardonnay, and is a blend of at least two vintages. Last week I had the opportunity to drink some pretty fancy wine. High expectations can color things. But you get my point.

Turns out it was the 1998 Mont Mains and the Napa-based wine industry guy shared the wealth, he called it Chardonnay. The wine was still fresh yet overripe and though I cringe at calling Chablis chardonnay, he was right. He poured for us the 1998 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape. JEALOUSY!
