As usual, the weather in Champagne was a stormy, freezing mess. Even in Champagne this kind of viticulture seems out of date. The wine was still fresh yet overripe and though I cringe at calling Chablis chardonnay, he was right. He poured for us the 1998 Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf du Pape. JEALOUSY! What’s interesting about Mr. Mariotti is his lively personality and easy way of describing the flavors in the glass, especially to a crowd interested in wine and champagne but not technically trained in the field.
