Gaja Vertical Tasting of Sperss at Vinexpo
The 1996 , 2001, 2003, 2005, were all fab with their own special character. This is not typical in New York and possibly other countries, but this is Mr. Gaia speaking and he spoke with such incredible passion it was mesmerizing. Fabulous vertical of sperss today at  Vinexpo. That is why Sperss means nostalgia.

Bodega DiamAndes Comes to New York
We are here at this fun restaurant overlooking 57th street to taste some of Jean-Jacques new releases for the American market, and I am excited by the opportunity to ask a Uco Valley producer a variety of questions about the terroir of this Argentine region about an hour south of Mendoza, and taste his wines. Again 100% French oak, 25% new.

Pauillac Lunch with the Wine Media Guild
The venue, a private room at Felidia in New York City, where outside the large window one could see trees swaying in the rain and wind. This was changed when the British market demanded the “new claret” which was barrel aged instead of served fresh and young. Some of the wines tasted: Chateau Clerc-Milon: 1994, 2004, 2005, 2006.

    Concannon Conservancy Petite Sirah 2008
In 1996, Concannon was the first Livermore Valley vineyard to place its land into a permanent conservation easement. Last year I reviewed a 2007 Petite Sirah from Concannon Vineyard , so I was delighted to recently receive the 2008 vintage. The Conservancy collection includes Pitite Sirah, Merlot, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sunday Lunch for the Ages - A Guided Tour of the Early Days of Rosenthal Wine Merchant
Here's the thing - we crammed into several cars and drove from NYC where the snow was in gray and black piles against the parked cars, to the hilly horse farm country of mid-state New York. This past weekend I participated in one of the greatest wine events of my life. This was not a business lunch. The wines were very special.

When All the Wines are Noble, Old, and Glorious (Except for the one that I Brought)
It was a "soft" opening for a new Thai restaurant downtown in the old Cru space. But that bottle waited in the corner of the table, as a magnum of 1996 Bollinger Grande Année appeared. was surprised by how open and utterly drinkable the wine was, as you hear about how acidic and closed down the 1996's can be. And so we did.

Spotted in a San Diego Grocery Store
New York is not one of them, although there is a new proposal that would change that. The other night we drank a fantastic bottle of 1996 Fleury Champagne , $55 Terry Theise Selections (I guess Fleury used to be part of the Theise book) that I bought from this store. just can't see it. That's wine specialist territory.

Visiting Mayacamas Vineyards, Napa Valley [guest post]
Evan Dawson, who writes about Finger Lakes wines for the New York Cork Report (and who we last saw here ), recently tweeted that he was in Napa. Travers proudly announced that he “uses two percent new oak each year.&# Back in the tasting room, we tasted the current release (2004) and a library release (1996).

Natural wines, premox, chenin blanc, 07 Port and Rhone – John Gilman
At the time Madame Leroy was a fairly new devotee to biodynamism, and as part of her regimen in this vintage, she refused to spray her vines against mildew, which was potentially a huge problem during this growing season. Their current releases include the 1996, 1985 and 1959! asked him six questions; he replied with over 10,000 words!

Wine of the Week - Bernard Baudry's Rosé
We saw the vineyards surrounding the house, and then joined Mathieu in the house's tasting room where we sampled everything from the most recent Croix Boisée Blanc to the new lineup of reds to a 1996 Les Grezeaux, a gorgeous wine. Cory writes passionately about the wines he loves, and about his life in the Bay Area and beyond.

A historic tasting Down Under - Bin 60A, Grange, Hill of Grace
By showcasing talent old and new, it was kind of like one of those sports questions about who would be better head-to-head, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar vs LeBron James or Hank Aaron vs A-Rod kind of thing. had the good fortune of tasting this wine last fall in New York, and, sadly, the bottle I tried was off. Big time. alcohol.

    Duty Free Wine Is Insane
At that time, the 1996 Dom Perignon was just hitting shelves in the States, and it retailed for over $125. Veuve Clicquot's 1996 "La Grande Dame" (one of my favorite negotiant vintage blends) retails for $220, with their Demi-Sec selling for $40. I stopped in the Duty Free Shop on the return trip from Puerta Vallarta.

    Friday Night Bubbles
haven't seen a bottle of the vintage wine since I came across a 1996 on the shelves in San Diego last December. With distribution blanketing New York like that, it's easy to understand why Perrier-Jouet sued Fleury a few years back over the similarity of the two houses' ros é labels. Jean-Pierre Fleury is a pioneer of sorts.

Champagne Notes from the Martin Scott Portfolio
I had the distinct pleasure of going to the Martin Scott Portfolio Tasting last week at the New York State Theater at Lincoln Center. tried a new rating system this time, scoring wines out of 10 points and writing only the briefest of notes in order to speed myself up. cannot enjoy myself that way. Also very good. What a nose!

am really diggin' these Sauvignon Blancs from New Zealand. Don't get me wrong I like the Cali Sauvignon Blancs but the New Zealanders have the versatility when it comes to food. Not only in New York City but, really, everywhere more and more affordable wines are available from all around the world. Cheers

    Adventures in Wine Buying.Continued
Lo and behold, there was a brand new message from Konstantin!!! Of all the restaurants in New York, I had to visit the exact one whose stolen wine I was buying! All the while, Frank kept the wine flowing while extraordinary morsels kept appearing from the kitchen. offered to help if I could, and Simon and I exchanged numbers.

    A Brief Digression: Cari Bo
I spent almost a year between 1996 and 1997 traveling in Southeast Asia. learned as much as I could about the ingredients that define a certain cuisine, and when I returned to New York I sought out those ingredients in Chinatown (there are at least four Chinatowns in NYC) and practiced cooking my favorite dishes. Happy curry
