VINO JUNE 4, 2009 Australian Riesling - Can it age? - Grosset, Steingarten and Leo Buring The fourth vintage of Polish Hill, it was bottled under cork (they switched to screwcap around 2000) and had mid-shoulder fill (if the bottle had shoulders, that is) and came directly from the cellar of Jeffrey Grosset (pictured right), one of only a few bottles remaining. At the outset, it was a single vineyard wine of tiny production. | SLAKED DECEMBER 1, 2008 1995 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello There's little doubt this is a very good Monte Bello , constructed for a very long life, but in my estimation the 1995 lacks the density and concentration of the great Monte Bello's of the past decade, notably the 1996 and 2003. At thirteen, the 1995 Monte Bello is still a child. keep waiting for this wine to fully reveal itself. The Sheas began bottling their own wine under the label Shea Wine Cellars in 1996 and shared the Adelsheim facility for wine making. have tasted Shea Wine Cellars wines from several vintages in the past and enjoyed them very much, notably the 2000 and 2003 Estate wines (a blend of grapes from many of the vineyard blocks). The flight that was by far my least favorite happened to be from Moet (thumbs down on all 6 wines, including the 2000 Dom Perignon), a producer that represents the antithesis of healthy farming. This is the April, 2008 disgorgement and it is based mostly on 2004 grapes with 20% from 2002. I've drank the 1996 and the 1999 vintages, and both were excellent wines. tasted the 2000 a few months ago and loved it, although I haven't yet seen it on shelves. The blend is 50% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay, and 10% Meunier. MORE >>
