MARCH 2, 2012 [1981, Wineries] Visiting Tenuta dell ‘Ornellaia
Who would have thought that it is located in a Tuscan winery, not a museum! Ornellaia was founded in 1981 with the mission to produce outstanding wines given that the site was chosen for its unusual marine clay soils and microclimate. Isn't this art incredibly gorgeous?

MARCH 5, 2010 [1981, Wineries] Better know a wine law: Maryland!
To purchase wines, consumers residing Annapolis, Baltimore or along the Chesapeake must buy from a local store; comparison shopping through retailers on the internet or ordering directly from a winery is illegal. Maryland is also home to 38 wineries today. Seeking to jump-start the domestic wine industry after Prohibition, the US Department of Agriculture turned to this mid-Atlantic state, opening an experimental winery in Beltsville, Maryland.
A WINE STORY [1981, Wineries] Visiting Rioja
| MONDAY, MAY 14, 2012
This was a scholarly trip with a group of very well-educated educators, with a focus on the wines and wineries
of Groupo Faustino. We began with their winery
in Navarra, which is just about a half hour from our hotel in Logrono. The wineries
include Campillo and Marques de Vitoria also in Rioja; the above-mentioned Valcarlos in Navarra ; Condesa de Leganza in La Mancha ; Bodegas Portia in Ribera del Duero ; and Bodegas Victorianas, which offers varietal table wine from across Spain. MORE >>

The company was founded in 2004 by the Sociedade Agricola das Antas when three entities came together: Professor Dr. Jose Roquette, Sociedade Agricola Monte Barrao (owned by the Borges family), and the winemaker Peter Bright, an Australian who settled in Portugal in 1981
. A modern vinification center was built at the winery
in 2008 with sophisticated equipment and more than 600 oak barrels. Terra D'Alter Assistant Winemaker Frederico Rosa Santos. "I I remember you!" MORE >>
DR. VINO [1981, Wineries] In praise of mature wine
| THURSDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2010
On our anniversary last year, my wife and I enjoyed a 1981
Lopez de Heredia, Bosconia, gran reserva, a delicate, gorgeous wine that evolved with each course we ate. Given the winery
’s history for extended bottle aging, the wine is available today–and under $100 at a store. It may seem absurd to write a post in praise of mature wine–indeed, it’s one of those things, like sunny days and flowers in bloom, that people aren’t exactly rushing to oppose. MORE >>
WINE TASTING GUY [1981, Wineries] What a Day! 2 Wine Tastings!!
| SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2008
The 1981.yes, I said 1981
Pauillac Grand Vin de Chateau Latour - what a treat! I talked a bit about each of the wineries
, told them about the wine makers, and we then tasted the wines together. I went away (within Israel) for the sabbath to a friend of the family. A wonderful woman and great cook it is always a nice shabbat when spent with her and her family. MORE >>
WINE TASTING GUY [1981, Wineries] Polaner tasting standouts
| WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008
Either way, while it was overwhelming, I tasted some very fine wines and met some very personable and charming winemakers (or winery
proprietors). This winery
produces sweet whites that are apparently held in the winery
for at least 10 years before release. This winery
may sound familiar as I tasted some of their wines with my tasting group. Maybach winery
from the Napa Valley had one wine at the tasting. MORE >>
