FEBRUARY 10, 2009 [1981, Group] The Return to Terroir Tasting Panel: part two
Stefano Bellotti, sat at the head and introduced the Italian wines to the group. Stefano, I believe, was the first Italian biodynamist, having gone the way of Steiner in 1981. We pulled chairs around a long and narrow wooden table. To me right was Pascaline, next to her Anne-Claude. A sniffly champagne maker, David Leclapart sat across as did Nicolas. To my immediate right, the very Laurence Olivier look-a-like, Mark Angeli.

DECEMBER 2, 2010 [1981, Group] Money isn't Everything
As with most great wines, there are fantastically expensive bottles and modestly priced bottles, and when thinking about the wines as a group, price does not necessarily indicate quality. The first wine we drank was the 1981 Krug Collection , about $700, imported by Moet/Hennessy/Diageo.

This was a scholarly trip with a group of very well-educated educators, with a focus on the wines and wineries of Groupo Faustino. Our leader was the very affable and fun Javier pictured above with an equally fun member of our group. Ah, Rioja!

Inside the tourist office the air is warm and Nuno and I reconnect - I had visited Portugal a few years back with a group of educators, and we had visited his facility. Terra D'Alter Assistant Winemaker Frederico Rosa Santos. "I I remember you!"

This winery may sound familiar as I tasted some of their wines with my tasting group
. I got to try the Lopez de Heredia Gravonia Rioja Blanco Crianza 1998, Tondonia Rioja Blanco Reserva 1989 & Tondonia Rioja Blanco Gran Reserva 1981
. LdH wines are very well regarded coming out of Rioja, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to try a 2002, 2000, 1999, 1987, 1981
