    Visiting Glen Carlou & Backsberg
Michael joined the business in 1976 and focused exclusively on wine, selling off other parts of the business. Arco Laamar & Harry Haddon (checked shirt). Two wineries being neighborly!”. Both seemed very effervescent and personable and passionate about South Africa and its wines. Tread Lightly by Backsberg anyone?). Glen Carlou Website.

Sunday Lunch for the Ages - A Guided Tour of the Early Days of Rosenthal Wine Merchant
Everyone enjoyed the wine, and everyone was surprised when it was revealed to be a California Pinot Noir from 1976, a time when a lot of great wine was being made in California in the gently extracted and low alcohol old-world style. This past weekend I participated in one of the greatest wine events of my life.

Truth and fiction: Ross Schwartz, screenwriter of Bottle Shock, the movie
It loosely depicts the events of the Paris tasting of 1976 when a Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and a Stag’s Leap Cabernet Sauvignon surprised the wine world by beating their French peers in a blind tasting. So Ross Schwartz told the assembled group at the Symposium for Professional Wine Writers in Napa last week.

CHARDONNAY: A STUDY IN WHAT WENT WRONG
European vines traveled to California in the mid 19th century. Chardonnay came to California in the 1930's but wasn't thought about much. He was in love with the wines of Burgundy and felt he could emulate that style in California. Most fruit wasn't so good." This, "is what Kevin Kelley calls a ‘perfect storm'." Cheers

    Polaner tasting standouts
Making my way past the French wines I landed in the California section. But the lure of the reds grabbed me and it was the California reds and people I either knew or recognized who convinced me that white time was up. In addition to the 3 whites and 1 rose I tried, I also tried 6 reds, ranging from as young as 2002 to as old as 1976.

2004 Ridge Vineyards Monte Bello **
have tasted Monte Bello cabernets from 1976, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1993, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2004, and I am constantly amazed by the wine's ability to age gracefully. According to the professional wine critics, 2004 was a very good vintage for California cabernets, merlots, and blends. These wines require patience. Margaux.)

DRINKING A 2005 BENSON FERRY OLD VINE ZINFANDEL WITH A LITTLE BIT OF BACKGROUND
Where does it come from and why is it so popular and plentiful in California and not so much everywhere else. And if Primitivo from Apulia is closely related to Zinfandel how did Zinfandel become so popular in California? Okay, so now we know where the grape came from but how did it get all the way to California? in most wine).

It Was A Good Day To Be A WIne Geek
Stag's Leap is one of the most prominent wine producers in California. tend to focus on the under twenty-dollar range but if I were to go above such limits in the California category this producer would on the short list. It is a chardonnay with minimal oak from California with a pre-harvest trim to concentrate the flavor.
