But a tasting last week in the Barossa Valley did showcase some of Australia’s most amazing wines of all time. Andrew Caillard of Langton’s, an auctioneer, told us that it took him nine months to arrange the tasting, adding that many of the bottles were among the last available. Tasting through her recent vintages here- particularly in a vineyard such the premier cru of Clavoillon (which used to be a bid of an underperformer in the Leflaive stable)- it is pretty hard not to agree with her wholeheartedly in the greater signature of terroir in the Leflaive wines today. We were promised a "week of fine and rare wine" and really experienced it today with this 1966 Port, 1971 Chateau d'Yquem, '82 Conterno Barolo. and Anthony Hanson MW of Christies giving a tutored tasting of red and white Cru Burgundy as well as a talk on the auction process. really fun group of people and a well executed program. Shirley and I started out a little late, but were able to taste some outstanding wines at five equally outstanding wineries along the southern east side of the Seneca Lake Trail and the west side of Keuka Lake. There I tasted more reds and found an interesting blend 'Viridescens', a bordeaux style blend of Cab Franc, Cab/Sauv and Merlot. MORE >>
