Palivou Vineyards Nemea Agiorgitiko 2006
From the Northeastern region of Greece, this red wine shows very deep colors, thick and opaque, as if unfiltered, the nose is concentrated and resinous with dark brooding cherries. The flavors are very bitter, reminding me a bit of Averna, an Italian liqueur (made with herbs, roots and citrus rinds that are soak in the base liquor before caramel is added). Also present is a mix of spices, dried herbs, glycerine, slate

Li Veli Passamante Salento Negroamaro 2008 IGT
From Salento in Puglia this 100% Negroamaro is aged for six months in French oak and six months in bottle. On the noses, red roses... with fresh herbs and juicy red flavors that are fruit forward but show a slight undertone of citrus and even slighter of cherry powdered candy (kind of like "Pixie Stix" candy from childhood years) in the back end. Finishes

Italian Wine Series: Part 5-The Wines of Marches (Marche)
Located on the Adriatic coast of Italy, the "calf" of the boot, Marche, has been known for its Verdicchio white wine that comes in the familiar green amphora bottle. The region was primarily known for its white wines and the Verdicchio di Matelica has emerged as one with even more character. The reds are emerging from the shadow of the whites, including the Rosso Piceno, a blend of mostly Sangiovese with small amounts of Montepulciano,

Tenuta Mormoraia Chianti Colli Senesi 2006 DOCG
San Gimignano is an old walled city in Tuscany that I was lucky enough to visit during my cycling trip in 2006. Here is a beautiful red wine from that region called Tenuta Mormoraia Chianti Colli Senesi 2006 DOCG. Grown in the clayey soils of the Colli Senesi hills around San Gimignano, these Sangiovese grapes yield a wine that is a deep ruby red in color.

Montes, Cabernet Sauvignon, 2007, Classic Series, Chile
From the Colchagua Valley in Chile comes this playful Cabernet Sauvignon... it's a deep colorful wine, (literally and figuratively) and I found myself enjoying it more as it breathed. The color is a dark ruby, and fruity aromas prevail with a wisp of smoked bacon, probably from the American oak, caramel, and a hint of tree bark. Flavors

A Naples (Florida) Winelist Challenge
A longtime reader contacted me the other day to say that he would be traveling in Florida, and would be having dinner with his wife at a restaurant in Naples. He wanted to know what I would drink if I were spending about $100. He said that he would prefer to drink either white or red Burgundy, but he would be open to other suggestions.

Paul Draper’s forty years and the making of Ridge Monte Bello
Paul Draper is, without question, one of the world’s great winemakers. Even though he has every reason to be an egotistical blowhard, he remains humble and democratic in spirit, asking sincere questions of those around him and quick to point to his team as the reason for the winery’s success. It may sound absurd to think that a winemaker’s personality is as discernible in the glass as the terroir , but that combination of curiosity, humility, and respectful excellence comes through in the wines of Ridge Vineyards.

Antica Terra, Botanica, and Lillian
On Monday I was fortunate to attend a lunch at Eleven Madison Park hosted by Maggie Harrison, the proprietor of Antica Terra winery in Amity, Oregon. In short, Maggie's pinot noirs from Willamette Valley are not of this world. In 2007, in which it rained 9.5

Moss-age in a bottle
It’s been a long, cold 2009 here in the northeast. All the more reason to have a little winter garden. In a wine bottle.
Last fall, I discovered and was immediately inspired by the work of Paula Hayes, an artist in the East Village. What captivated my attention were her beautiful terrariums, exquisite

Blind tasting is tough – tasting Bordeaux 2005 with Robert Parker
On Wednesday evening I attended a tasting of fifteen wines from Bordeaux 2005. The vintage was widely hailed as superb and pre-recession demand drove the prices into the stratosphere. Aside from that outrageous apparent quality of the wines, the tasting had two other attractions: the ability to taste some of the top wines blind and to do so in the company of Robert Parker.

Cork dork: Ten cool things to do with leftover wine corks
After uncorking a bottle and enjoying the wine, probably most people throw the cork in the trash. Certainly there’s worse waste: It’s not as if there are junkyards full of corks, and since they are the bark of oak trees, they are biodegradable. But surely we can do better than simply throw them away.

The carbon footprint of wine in National Geographic
National Geographic has produced an excellent graphic in the May issue about wine’s carbon footprint (unfortunately, no link is yet available but the magazine is arriving in mailboxes and newsstands now). Pablo Paster and I provided the numbers for them based on our joint research on the subject.
We previously discussed the “green line” for wine and how it is

Why so few tasty American wines under $12? Wine importer Bobby Kacher
Following our discussion of why there are so few tasty low priced wines from America, particularly compared to imports, I put the question to wine importer Bobby Kacher. Robert Kacher Selections is strong in bargains from Southwestern France; I highlighted the Tariquet Sauvignon ( find this wine ) in my book, A Year of Wine, as one of 10 great wines under $10 ( REDS from Patrick Campbell was also included).
